My husband and I just bought land on Caye Caulker, and we are looking to get a sea wall put in. I know that we have to apply for a permit through the government. I have been told it can take upwards of two months to get approval. We are currently back home in the US, and having to do the permit process from afar before we come back over for the seawall. Does someone possibly have a link to the agency within the government that I need to go through for the permit process? I have tried googling it, but I am coming up empty. I am new to this "land in another country" thing, and am pulling my hair out trying to get everything done, lol. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Whomever is putting in your sea wall will get the permits for you. If you are actually planning on doing it yourself than I would hire a contractor to get the permits for you. I may be corrected but I think you have to get the permitting in Belmopan. Good luck

Sea walls are a mixed blessing - as Bear points out they protect one area but can create a new problem down-current. I've observed that carefully placed natural groynes work pretty well at catching sand going either direction and they don't seem to create the kind of adjacent erosion that sea-walls can cause. The best results I have seen though were with a nano-tube - properly used they are really effective. The biggest challenge is getting the sand for filling them. Done incorrectly they can be ugly and ineffective but done right they virtually disappear and nature deposits new sand that stays.
