Coral Reef Ed-ventures Celebrates 15 Years in Belize
The Coral Reef Ed-Ventures was in San Pedro for its 15th terrific year of coral reef programs. Smith College/Hol Chan Coral Reef Ed-Ventures is an educational summer program that teaches children about reef ecology and conservation. This year's team of student teachers from Smith College consisted of: Kayla Clark, Kiara Gomez, Riley Gage, Clara Rosebrock, Victoria Dunch and Elena Karlsen-Ayala. The Smith student teachers and school children, aged 7 to 11, participated in a two-week, inquiry-based program to learn about coral reefs. There was also a one-week program for youth aged 12 and older, during which the students produced a final project to share with their community. During the second week the students went on a glass bottom boat trip to Hol Chan Marine Reserve to see the corals, sea grass and animals that they had learned about. Students also enjoyed a presentation from the American Crocodile Education Sanctuary (ACES) on crocodile habitats and also had a presentation on conservation done by Judy Waight, Education Outreach Officer, Belize Coalition to Save our Natural Heritage.

Pic of the Week: Experience Belize as Mother Nature Intended
The slogan "No shirt, No shoes, No problem" is epitomized by this picture of three Belizean boys having fun in a hot summer afternoon. A dory and a paddle, of course, the placid, warm Caribbean Sea is all that Belizean kids need to have a whale of a time. And it is not only Belizean kids, but hundreds of international tourists who come to Belize to throw away the neck tie as well as the shirt, exchange the shoes for dive fins or bare feet, and forget the problems of a fast paced society to engage in the relaxing, slow paced ambience of Belize. Come and exchange your car for a dory and experience Belize as "mother nature intended".

25 Years Ago: The Development of the San Pedro High School
There was a time when only two or three young men or ladies from San Pedro had the fortune to attend high school in Belize City. In the 1960's I can count the students who had this wonderful opportunity- youngsters like Pedro Salazar, Betito Marin, Artemio Cardenez, Daniel Alamilla, Gonzalo Heredia, yours Truly Angel Nuez, Manuel Heredia, Wilfrido Nunez, Nando Trejo. On the ladies side it was Cruzita Salazar, Ilda Guerrero, Iraida Staines, Isela Gonzalez. See not even 20 in a ten-year period. Then in 1971 San Pedro's first high school was founded under the name of St. Peter's College. It included two teachers and 25 students. The building used was the community center which had a water tank on the ground floor and a concrete first floor with a wood floor. In the first year there was only one classroom and then every year as the school grew, another classroom was built. The second one was the enclosure of the downstairs and the third was a hardboard (celotex) structure with celotex windows and door.

Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopters over Ambergris Caye
While we visited Ambergris Caye on Saturday, several of these Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopters were seen hovering over the reef. These helicopters are American twin-engine, tandem rotor heavy-lift helicopters. Their primary roles are troop movement, artillery placement and battlefield resupply. They have a wide loading ramp at the rear of the fuselage and three external-cargo hooks. With a top speed of 170 knots (196 mph, 315 km/h) these helicopters are faster than contemporary 1960s utility and attack helicopters. The CH-47 is among the heaviest lifting Western helicopters. Its name is derived from the Native American Chinook people.

Israel "Rally" Alpuche of Corozal Town, a former minister of government between - 1984 to 1989 - passes at the age of 71.
"Don Rally" as we fondly and affectionately called him, had been battling with complications of diabetes for some time now. He silently passed away yesterday morning around 7 o'clock at the Corozal Community Hospital. Israel Alpuche served as Minister of Energy and Communication in the mid-1980's. During his tenure as Minister of Energy and Communication, he was instrumental in negotiating an agreement for the supply of electricity to Belize from Mexico, and also oversaw the expansion of telecommunication services in Belize. Many times, the Editor of the Corozal Daily would sit down with Don Rally in his backyard and reminisce on his political career and the future of Corozal. He was always eager to mince conversation with us and have a good laugh. The giant of a man will certainly be missed by our community. At the time of his passing, Don Rally was still serving his community as Justice of the Peace and Commissioner of the Supreme Court. Don Rally was a wealth of information and wisdom.

Felicia Chen Gets 8 Years For Killing Her Babies
23 year-old Felicia Chen, the young mother who admitted in Supreme Court that she drowned her 3 babies was given a 24-year prison sentence by Justice Troadio Gonzales. That's the decision that the judge delivered today after 4 days after deliberating on how much time she should spend for committing the triple manslaughter. As we told you, as we told you, Chen decided to forego a lengthy trial for 3 counts of murder by pleading guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter. She and her attorney told the court that she was diagnosed with severe depression. She also plead for leniency saying that in addition to her depression, she was destitute, abused and forced to prostitution, and that she had a breakdown when she heard voices who convinced her to kill her babies.

Grandfather Killed Uncharacteristically; Unintended Street Slaying
And while she grieves and continues contemplate the killing of her children, the Mendoza family is grieving the loss of a husband, a father, and a grandfather who was mercilessly shot in the head on Saturday night. Just before 11, 59 year-old Julio Mendoza was playing dominoes with his friends on Raccoon Street Extension when a gunman ran pass and shot him in the head. He clung to life for another 6 and a half hours, but in the end, he succumbed to his injury at the KHMH. Mendoza was a law-abiding citizen and parent, so at this time, investigators believe that it was a case of mistaken identity. Today, the Deputy Officer Commanding Precinct 2 briefed the media on Mendoza's fatal shooting:

Cashier Shot In Publics Robbery
Mendoza's shooting was one of two which happened in Belize City this weekend. Resident's may have noticed that it rained quite a lot yesterday, but that didn't stop 2 men from robbing the Publics Clinic and Pharmacy on West Canal Street, and shooting the cashier because she refused to give them the money. Police say that at around 11 on Sunday morning, 23 year-old Fatima Figueroa was working at the cash register for the P-Clinic and Pharmacy when 2 men entered through the front door. One of them was armed, and that man pointed the gun at her and demanded that she open the cash register. When she refused to comply, the man shot her in the left side of her abdomen. Shortly after, the men robbed a 38 year-old teacher of her sling purse which contained her $400 in cash, her cellular phone, her keys, and her passport, and her son's passport. The men then ran out of the business place and rode off on bicycles.

Noh Mul Case Will Start Next Time
In May of last year, the media uncovered the mauling of the Noh Mul archaeological site in which a company was scrapping it for road fill materials. Even more startling than that was the revelation that UDP Standard Bearer for Orange Walk Central Denny Grijalva was implicated in that scandal because it was his business, De-Mars Stone Company, which was accused of the crime. A few weeks later, Denny Grijalva, and his wife Emelda Grijalva, who represented as Managing Directors for De-Mars Stone Company, Javier Nunez, their foreman, and excavator driver Emil Cruz were all marched to court on charges for it. It's been 14 months since that revelation, and today, all accused persons went back to court ready to stand trial.

A Fatal Accident & A Fatal Hit And Hit A Run
Police continue to investigate two traffic accidents which killed 2 people over the weekend. One of the drivers for the one of the incidents is a controversial figure he's been featured in the news before. The first one happened just before 9 on Friday night. 35 year-old William Lopez of Esperanza was riding his bike in the village, and he was heading in the direction Central Farm. That's around the time when a red Chevy Silverado Truck, which was being driven by 46 year-old Imer Hernandez, a business man from Arenal Road. Hernandez reported to police that he was driving toward San Ignacio when a vehicle coming from the opposite direction temporarily blinded him with its high beams. Lopez is believed to have died shortly after the accident when he suffered massive injuries to his head and body.

Police Say He Shot A Man With A Sawed Off
Eighteen Tevin Palmer, an unemployed of 61 King Street, who the police alleged shot 21 year old Sean fisher, was charged with attempted murder when he appeared today before Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser. Palmer was also charged with wounding and use of deadly means of harm. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. on July 5, but Palmer was not detained until Friday, July 11. Fisher reported to the police that he was on Dean Street, across the next side from "Kick Down Fence", when a person dressed in full black whom he recognized as Palmer, approached him and pointed a sawed-off shotgun at him and fired a shot. Fisher said that he was shot in his abdomen and the left side of his buttocks. Fisher was taken to Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where the doctor who examined and treated him classified his injury as wounding.

Big Questionable Pay-outs At KHMH?
The KHMH Administration is doing some deep digging into its accounts after massive unauthorized pay-outs were made to suppliers in early June. 7News has received reports that the disbursements amounted to hundreds of thousands of dollars and it has left the institution with a short-term cash flow crisis where it is having difficulty meetings its regular payments. Credible reports say the investigation includes queries into the acquisition of two X-Ray machines from an Orange Walk based business which sells furniture. These were reportedly paid for without invoice or contract - and the bill was in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. It's so serious that the hospital may have to commission an audit to get to the bottom of it. We'll keep following the story.

Protesting For Ramon and Sonia
All last week, the news was dominated by the kidnapping, torture and murder of 71 year-old Ramon Cervantes Sr, and the discovery of 46 year-old Sonia Abac's bod. Well, this weekend, it was all about the state funeral for the late Ambassador Fred Martinez. We'll tell you about that later, but for effect, some 70 or so residents from Orange Walk stood and waited for the Government Representatives and the Prime Minister to pass by in the funeral procession to stage a protest on behalf of the deceased residents and their high profile murders. One of the protesters spoke with our colleagues from CTV 3 News, and explained its importance:

The Real Dangers Of Leptospirosis
For the past few months, we've reported a few times on the Leptospirosis - the dangerous infection caused by exposure to rats. But, ut stories so far have been clinical and remote with health technicians talking in the abstract about suspect cases. But, on Friday Monica Bodden got a chance to look the illness in its eye - after she linked up with a Belize City man who was knocking on death's door after a serious case of leptospirosis. Here's her story:.. Monica Bodden reporting After spending 16 days in a coma, 30 days in the hospital and given a 50/50 chance of survival, 21 year old Nigel Augustine is happy to be home. Monica Bodden "So you don't remember nothing that happened?" A month ago Augustine's health quickly deteriorated after he was infected with the deadly disease called leptospirosis.

Goff's Caye Lease Was Cancelled
Last week we told you about a lease on Goff's Caye that was approved to Ramon Cervantes. Well, today we called the commissioner of lands, Wilbert Vallejos, to ask him about this lease. While he declined our request for an interview, he did tell us that the lease has been cancelled. We are still unable to confirm which Ramon Cervantes held the lease.

Where's Delita Roca?
Today, a Willow's bank family is worried sick about the disappearance of their daughter and loved one, 13 year old daughter Delita Roca. The last time Delcie Roca saw her daughter was on Friday when the minor was picked up by the police for allegedly stealing a gold chain. She was released on Sunday, and then went missing. Her mother Delcie Roca told us today that her daughter must be found urgently since she is not only diabetic but also pregnant. Delcie Roca - Mother of missing child "I can't tell you what is happening to her right about now because I don't even know where she is. I can't find her and she is 13 years old, Delita Roca with a belly - pregnant. I really want to know if anybody has her, just release my child or whatever they can do for me to ease my pain because I am in a lot of pain. This will make the second time that she did this and I don't know what she is doing this for because she not really hungry. I sell chicharon out there, I am a business person, they don't need to do me this - it really hurt and painful. I have no idea, she is a minor, she is only 13 years old and whoever is encouraging and harboring her at their place, I don't know what to do."

Bze and Palestine Initiate Diplomatic Relations
Right now in the Middle East, the Palestinian territory is being bombarded by Israel, but the embattled state has a new friend in Belize. Formal Diplomatic Relations were established with the state of Palestine during a ceremony in Mexico City on Wednesday, July 9th. Ambassador of Belize to Mexico Oliver del Cid, , signed Joint Communiques with the Ambassador of Palestine in Mexico, Munjed Saleh. Ambassador del Cid noted f the cultural links between Belize and Palestine and that the establishment of diplomatic relations is a step forward for the international political system. In 2009 Belize signed a visa waiver memorandum of understanding with Israel but in 2011 voted at the United Nations to formally recognize Palestine as a sovereign and Independent state.

Gold Panners Arrested Inside Chiquibul
And more closer to home, San Ignacio police have detained four Guatemalan males after they were caught panning for gold in the Chiquibul. The news comes out of yesterday's Prensa Libre and local authorities have confirmed it. The four are residents of Monte Olivos in Dolores, Peten - and they include 14 year old - along with three men, ages, 25, 30 and 48. Police are expected to charge them for illegal entry - which will result in jail time unless they are unable to pay a fine. And while border encroachments continue, so too do the efforts to stop them by creating awareness on the Guatemalan side of the effects of these incursions on the Chiquibul forest. 7News has learned that last week, a great stride in this direction was made when a high level Guatemalan delegation visited Chiquibul and Caracol. The group - pictured here - included Guatemala's Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, senior OAS officials, and parliamentarians from Guatemala.

No Electricity In Pan Today
If you normally work in Belmopan, but you're a commuter, you must have realized that the power has been out in that city for the entire day, and still continues to be in a blackout at this time. Belize Electricity explains that the power interruption is the result of a damaged power transformer. Inclement weather during the course of the day presented challenges for the work crews, however, they continue with corrective action to restore power as soon as possible. The company continues to work on restoring power to the City of Belmopan, following an unscheduled power interruption at 7:00 a.m. today. The Company projects that power supply will be restored to the area by midnight.

Patrick Menzies Calls Out Hon. Elrington
Patrick Menzies is fast becoming known that type of activist who - shall we kindly say - agitates with strong messages, but who often lacks the numbers to flex. Today, he organized protest of 5 - including himself - to call out Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington. Menzies claims that Elrington made a controversial public statement which could be interpreted as a subtle support for the LGBT agenda. He invited the media out and explained his latest grievance: Patrick Menzies - Lead Protester "We are out here for two reasons; one is to bring awareness to the constitution awareness month that we are doing in Belmopan at the national assembly plaza. On Wednesday will be 30 days. We are having a special meeting at 10am to bring awareness to that, but #2, most Belizeans don't know that Minister Elrington or Minister of Foreign Affairs said at the OAS when they were discussing de-criminalization of homosexuality the LGBT, he said specifically that he supports - he said that 'we supports all' the principles of the OAS. We like to have a stronger OAS. Fine with the strong OAS, but we have a problem with all the principles. They were there to de-criminalization homosexuality. That is a crime in Belize. How can the Minister of Foreign Affairs representing a nation that says that homosexuality is illegal? How can he say in an international body that we support all of its principles - that is a complete oxymoron; how can you support all the principles, but we don't support gay? It's completely wacko. We want Belizeans to realize that Minister Elrington needs to either retract what he said or change jobs."

An Artistic Take On The Noh Mul Mauling
Earlier on in the news, we told you about the start of the Noh Mul trial in Corozal town. Well, whether by coincidence or design, a group of artists from the Image Factory made a timely art intervention at the Noh Mul site in the Orange Walk District on Saturday. A total of nine artists and poets led by Yasser Musa visited Noh Mul which is near Nuevo San Juan village. They produced three works of art on site. The first is called Naked at Noh Mul by Micah Vernon where the artist posed in front of the damaged main temple with a well-placed sign saying "Welcome to Las Vegas." The second piece by Kate Usher was named "Bury My Credentials" and the third by Yasser Musa is called Landing on Nohmul by Yasser Musa. He told our colleagues at CTV-3 about the idea behind the art intervention:..

Ambassador Fred Got The State's Good Bye
The state funeral for Ambassador Fred Martinez was held on Saturday in Orange Walk. Now, there are many official funerals, but state funerals don't happen that often: National Hero George Price's one was in 2011, and before that you'd probably have to go back to 2003 for Agripino Cawich - who was a sitting Area Representative at the time of his passing. So, Fred Martinez's funeral was a big deal, first because he was a senior diplomat not a sitting minister of representative, and second because of the slight novelty factor: Martinez was cremated in Guatemala - so his would be the first state funeral without a flag draped coffin - instead, it would be a flag draped urn.

The World Cup Finished This Weekend
Tens of thousands of Belizeans watched the World Cup final on Sunday all across the country - and they saw Germany edge out Argentina one- nil in an extra time thriller. The game was live from Maracana stadium in Rio De Janeiro where 74,000 fans crowded into the celebrated stadium. Victory was clinched with a goal in the 112th minute of extra time, followed by a hearty celebration for the Germans who won their fourth World Cup. Wherever or however you watched it - whether on Channel 7's FIFA feed, Univision or ABC - it was made by possible by Channel 7, our main sponsor BTL and the Cable Television Operators Association. That's because 2014 marked the first time that a Belizean broadcaster had to pay for the rights for the World Cup so that it could be seen all across the country.

Publics’ Cashier Robbed and Shot
A woman was shot on Sunday morning during a robbery at Public's Fruit and Vegetable in downtown Belize City. Just around eleven o'clock yesterday morning, 23 year old Fatima Figueroa was working cashier duties at the shop when two dark-complexioned men came in and pointed a firearm at her, demanding that she opens the cash register..but Figueroa refused and it is at that point that she was shot. One of the customers who asked to remain anonymous and distorted her voice told us what happened. WITNESS "There was a man standing by the door and he was searching that man and he took away the man's money and phone. The other one by the cashier told the cashier about two to three times to open the cash register because they wanted the money but she just refused and she didn't open it so someone was coming to buy and when they saw the customer coming they shot the girl and went out. Capital City Suffers 17-Hour Power Outage
Residents of the City of Belmopan are being placed on alert as the power outage which set in around seven o'clock this morning will continue up until around midnight tonight. Manager of Corporate Services at the Belize Electricity Limited, Dawn Sampson, told Love News that a work crew was dispatched immediately following the outage. DAWN SAMPSON "Approximately 7am today we lost power supply to the entire City of Belmopan. We immediately dispatched our work crews to the substation in the area where we identified that there was a failed power transformer. So what is taking place as I speak, crews are in the field replacing that damaged equipment and at this point in time we are projecting that the power should be restored by mid-night. Changes in Belize Police Department
There have been some unnoted changes within the Belize Police Department over the last few weeks particularly, involving the senior ranks and postings of officers. With perhaps, the biggest jurisdiction to be responsible for is the Eastern Division of the Belize District. Effective July 3, 2014, Senior Superintendent Dezerie Phillips became the head, replacing Assistant Commissioner of Police, Miguel Segura. Segura has been elevated and is now acting in the capacity of Deputy Commissioner of Police. Love News understands that there have been other changes around the country including the movement of Superintendent Ralph Moody as the Officer in Charge of San Ignacio to the Stann Creek District where he is now the Regional Commander of the southern formation.

Watching World Cup final in Belize
Worldwide TV's were tuned in to see the final world cup match and San Pedro Belize was no exception, there was no shortage of bars to watch the game from. I was considering going to Caribbean Villas with Paul for the game till our downstairs neighbors mentioned they were having a small party and I decided that was a better option. I love private pool parties and it does not get any better than your neighbors planning a delicious barbecue social right in your own backyard. As I was doing my Sunday morning errands before the party, I saw a few Germany fans cheering their team on. No Argentina flags that morning, I did see a big one going down Middle St. the other day.

Ashley's Cost of Living in Belize City, Belize
I met Ashley last summer in San Pedro. Last year, she got a job with a Not-For-Profit Organization operating just outside of Belize City and was planning her move there. She's now settled in the city and she was GENEROUS enough to read my Cost of Living yesterday for San Pedro and send me her own. Though the city is only 10-15 miles away, in many ways, it's a different world. Take it away Ashley Living in the city can be A LOT cheaper than living in San Pedro; however there are a few things to remember. This is a city, not a town. You can't walk everywhere and frankly, I wouldn't ride a bike here either (I've seen countless bikers get hit by cars) and therefore; need a car or prepare to blow your budget and lots of time for that matter, on bus and taxi rides. Let me break it down: all prices in Belize Dollars.

My Cost of Living in San Pedro, Belize
Moving to another country is a big deal. No matter how you look at it. And estimating how much day to day life is really going to cost is tough. When I started blogging a few years ago (September 2011), I wrote a post called How Much Does it Really Cost to Live in Belize. Just a listing of expenses, my expenses, in the most expensive spot in Belize - Ambergris Caye. Here is an update. It's a guide, a loose guide, to how much it might cost you to live in San Pedro. Hopefully it helps. Monthly rent: $1700 bzd. This is on the expensive/very expensive side. I live in a second floor condo unit at Royal Palm (http://www.royalpalmcondos.com/) with a large kitchen, washer/dryer, one bedroom, one loft and two bathrooms. It's 3 or 4 back from the beach. Could I find cheaper? Yes. But I like the distance from town (about 2 miles south) - it's nice and quiet. And I like that there is security. I am, at some point, planning to move closer to town (for blogging purposes) and hope to go cheaper.

Belize's Budding Environmentalists are Happy Campers
Yes, once again Belize's young environmental activists are taking to the woods to learn about the natural world and how to protect it through environmental sustainability, responsible travel and hands-on instruction in areas such as Maya organic farming practices while getting a deeper appreciation of Belize's rich natural and cultural heritage. Oh, and did we mention fun? There will be lots of that during the weeklong Eco-Kids educational summer camp sponsored by The Lodge at Chaa Creek. Each year Mick and Lucy Fleming sponsor 24 young Belizeans to take part in what some have described as the educational adventure of a lifetime. And if this sounds like an exaggeration, consider:

"Don't Cry for Me Argentina" in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize.
As the number of World Cup games during the final week of the tournament decreased I started to get a few things done. I spent some early mornings (starting around 07.00 hours) weeding the front garden and I gave the dock a protective coat of weather shield. "Honest, I'm not sunbathing. There's a paintbrush in my hand!" "No comments about lying down on the job please." Rose and I watched the two semi- final games at Carlo & Ernie's Runway Bar & Grill and Rose won a prize for guessing that Germany would beat Brazil.

Most Secluded Belize Beaches Worth Visiting
With its magnificent coastline hugging the Caribbean Sea with more than 200 islands, Belize offers stunning beaches that you can go to by plane or boat from Belize City. Most of these beaches remain to be a secret, discovered only by anglers and dive enthusiasts who venture off the beaten track. Here are some of the most beautiful little-known, secluded plots floating up the turquoise waters of Belize. Half Moon Caye Prepare to gasp at the paradisiacal views of Caribbean waters and a crescent-shaped beach made up of magnificent white sand, dotted with coconut palms. Half Moon Caye's no-frills, untouched beach is also a protected turtle-nesting site. The other half of the caye is made up of littoral forest, home to a protected red-footed booby sanctuary. Whenever you are done gasping and frolicking hike go over to the forest side and climb the observation tower and bird watch above the canopy.

Foot Power: Gung Ho Bikes team surprises itself in Belize
The folks at Gung Ho Bikes in Manchester Township have accomplished some amazing feats over the years, and it has been my pleasure to report them to our local community. In 2014, the crew of Jay and Penny Zech, Doug Hershey and Rob Kinsley have been busy again. The Gung Ho quartet traveled to Belize to compete in a grueling, four-day event called the Maya Mountain Adventure Challenge. The race took place from Feb. 13-16 and it was a true test of endurance. Competitors got to experience an amazing wilderness adventure that included caves, rivers, waterfalls and ancient ruins. Athletes were tested on their mountain bike, trek, canoe, stand-up paddleboard, and map-reading skills as they traveled more than 250 miles of the Cayo district of Belize.

Belize's lobster, conch, and fish populations rebuild in no-take zones
A new report from the Wildlife Conservation Society shows that no-take zones in Belize can not only help economically valuable species such as lobster, conch, and fish recover from overfishing, but may also help re-colonize nearby reef areas. The report-titled "Review of the Benefits of No-Take Zones"-represents a systematic review of research literature from no-take areas around the world. The report was written by Dr. Craig Dahlgren, a recognized expert in marine protected areas and fisheries management. The report comes as signatory countries of the Convention on Biological Diversity countries are being required to protect at least 10 percent of their marine territory.

Navy divers are in Belize for Southern Partnership Station '14
Navy divers from Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit Two (MDSU 2) are in Belize working with divers from the Belize coast guard service as part of Southern Partnership Station 2014. "Today we took the coast guard divers out," said Navy Diver 2nd Class Robert LaFrance, a MDSU 2 diver. "We got to know each other's work habits a little bit." The divers traveled about 12 miles from shore and dived in crystal-clear water. The clear water makes it easier for groups of divers to stay together and watch each other's techniques. "This group of Coast Guard divers just graduated PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors)," said Senior Chief Navy Diver Russell Ciardiello, master diver for MDSU 2 Company 2-1. "For the most part, they don't have any dives since their certifications. It went really well; couldn't have asked for a better operation." The MDSU divers will be traveling and diving in four different countries during the Southern Partnership Station mission, and they will be working with divers at each stop.

Trading Suspended on Mysterious Company Worth $4 Billion Despite Making No Money
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission suspended trading Friday of Cynk Technology Corp., a mysterious social network operator whose stock price skyrocketed, despite having no members, no revenue, and no assets. The SEC ordered the stoppage because of "concerns regarding the accuracy and adequacy of information in the marketplace and potentially manipulative transactions in Cynk's common stock." Cynk's stock jumped 23,067 percent in the past month from just a few pennies to $13.90, making the company worth more than $4 billion. The surge began in May, after closing at 6 cents on the 15, and then jumping 3.650 percent to close at $2.25 on June 17. The company's background is just as baffling. Its most recent SEC filing, by Cynk's lone employee Marlon Sanchez, listed its headquarters at an office building in Belize City, Belize, but its suite does not exist, the building secretary told Bloomberg. And its website, introbiz.com (plastered with pictures of celebrities it offers to buy contact information for) appears to have been registered by the Scottsdale, Arizona-based Domains By Proxy.

NCS seniors share Belize with community
Students of the Newcomb senior class arrived in Belize in mid April to no plumbing, electricity or technological amenities. #Annually the graduating class is afforded the opportunity to take a trip continentally or internationally that correlates with their Nations Of The World course. #Students fund raise all four high school years to earn the monetary means for their trip, with help in the form of a stipend from the school board. This year's trip, to Billy Hawk Caye, Belize, was spearheaded by teacher Autumn Goerner. Upon their return, the students chose to present their trip experiences with the community that supported them. #On June 21 the community was invited to attend as the seniors presented their trip video, a compilation of their experiences. Each student picked a topic to cover while in Belize for their video, interviewing locals, learning history and speaking with island professionals. Rebecca Marra chose the topic of native animals in Belize. Marra visited the Belize zoo where she photographed the baboon sanctuary.

JAVIER ROMERO: I'm Not Actually The CEO Of CYNK And I Never Received One Dollar In Compensation
Since mid-June, a mysterious penny stock called CYNK Technology has surged an astonishing 25,000%. On Friday, in response to the meteoric rise in CYNK's share price, the SEC halted trading in the company until July 24. The SEC's statement announcing the halt attributed it to "concerns regarding the accuracy and adequacy of information in the marketplace and potentially manipulative transactions in CYNK's common stock." At the height of this trading frenzy, CYNK was technically worth over $5 billion on paper. However, filings show the company had no revenue or assets. It's also a mystery who is really behind the company. Business Insider has had several conversations with a Belizean man named Javier Romero whose name and career history match descriptions of one of CYNK's CEOs. Though Romero eventually admitted there was a "proposed transaction" where he was allegedly supposed to purchase CYNK shares, his conversations with us were highly unusual. They were peppered with contradictory information and denials he knew anything about the company.
