We've been back a week or so....and are dreaming of our next return. Tradewinds Paradise Villas was fabulous and everything was very relaxing.
Our trip TO San Pedro was a little out of the ordinary though:
The first week of vacation our party of 4 was in a Cancun condo (ok-not my favorite place either but hey-it was free). We had planned on taking the bus from Cancun to Chetumal-bought bus tickets and everything. On the way to the bus station "Mario" the cabbie said he could drive us to Chetumal for 1000 pesos. The bus tickets for 4 cost about $80 and the bus would take about 6 hours. Mario said he could get us to Chetumal in about 3 1/2 hours. Hmmm-we went back to the bus station, cashed out the tickets and were off. On the way Mario discovered that Chetumal wasn't our final destination and said that for another $20 he would take us across the border and into Corazol. Hmmm. Ok again we said. Later we found out he'd never been into Belize before, was bewildered that english was the common language and that gasoline was priced in US dollars. LOL. Doing the trip this way, we made it to Corazol in plenty of time to catch the Thunderbolt over to AC and got an extra night in AC out of the deal. Whoopee!
The dives were generally great although it was quite windy the first few days so we waited until the vis got better to set up the dives. Clearly this was the low season because many days we (3 of us) were the only divers on the boat. The trip to Turneffe was especially fabulous (even if we did have to take another dive shop's much smaller boat because only the 4 of us were going). The trouble with the small boat was that it was a little rougher crossing (ok, quite a bit rougher) and it was hard to drink our rum and "coke-lite"s on the trip back. Unfortunately we spilled some (don't you hate it when that happens?!) But hey, who cares when you're on vacation?
I always spend my last days away plotting my next escape! (Or even better would be figuring out how to manage a three month sabatical there during the hell months of monsoon here in the Pacific Northwest) My only regret is that lobster was out of season! and that 2 weeks flew by TOO FAST.
