The entire country of Belize experienced a power outage on the eve of its Independence Day celebrations, but one street corner on Ambergris Caye, Belize was kept pretty well lit up courtesy of a recently installed street solar light. The corner intersection at the San Pedro Tropic Air's terminal building stayed brightly lit during this weekend's power outage due to the island's first solar-powered street light that was installed in collaboration with Sky Renewable (Tropic Air's Greif brothers Gary, Johnny and Max) and Area Representative Hon. Manuel Heredia Jr.; it was installed by Medina's Construction.

Gary Greif commented to Ambergris Today that hopefully it's the first of many to come for Ambergris Caye which could be a great project to light darker areas of the community that very much need it.

It is. Had a look at it last night. It's nowhere near as bright as it seems above but a really good idea and one that works well hopefully. Would work well as local Street lighting maybe on the new Road North and elsewhere going forward perhaps.

Who picks up the electric bill for Street lights? Local or National Gov? Thinking this through how is it metered as the STreet lights come straight off the mains with no meters etc.

not sure how things work there, Phil, but here the lights are the fiscal responsibility of the town. No meters, flat rate per light per month.

Given its location I'm surprised it isn't blinking out some sort of biblical message in Morse...
