Women-owned firm Arcturis is renovating Belize's international airport to improve passenger flow. According to Megan Ridgeway, an Arcturis principal, the opportunity to redesign the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport - 10 miles west of Belize City - arose via a referral from Belize's honorary consulate who is a Southern Illinois resident.

Design began in mid-July. It will bring the existing 55,000-square-foot, single-story airport to up to 80,000 square feet. No project costs are yet available. The fast-tracked renovation is estimated to be complete by the end of 2014. "A palette of blues will be featured within the airport's interior to provide travelers with a feel of the North Pacific, which lies just east of the developing Central American nation," Ridgeway said. "Imagery of Belize's Mayan culture and design details showcasing its destination for scuba diving, sailing and beyond is woven into the design." Technologically savvy navigation features will orient airport patrons as to where their queues are leading with the goal of reducing wait times, she said.

Arcturis is also designing a 10-year master plan for the airport.
