A security officer was stabbed twice during a broad daylight robbery in downtown San Pedro. The security guard has been identified as Robert Assi, a resident of the DFC area of San Pedro Town. The victim was apparently attacked by two men as he was heading to make a deposit at the bank. The robbery occurred at the corner of Barrier Reef Drive and Caribeña Street sometime around 1:20PM on Tuesday October 7th.

According to Assi’s employer Milo Paz of Milo’s Center, after the security guard was attacked and stabbed by the two men, the assailants made off with a deposit bag that was in his possession, containing $130,391. The culprits then ran towards the beach and continued southwards. The injured security guard ran behind his assailant yelling for help. Paz indicated that a group of citizens ran behind and one of the culprits was contained by a concerned resident. The San Pedro Sun understands that during the process, the deposit bag fell and a crowd in the area of Central Park began pulling at the bag, eventually bursting it. Those in the area scattered to help themselves to the lose money, allowing the original culprits to get away. “We are hoping that the people will return the money,” said Paz.

Security Guard Stabbed…Robbers Get $130,000

Roberto Assi

A daring heist in San Pedro this afternoon has left a security officer hospitalized after he was stabbed twice while en route to make a bank deposit.  Shortly after one o’clock, Roberto Assi was on his way to the Belize Bank when he was accosted by a pair of robbers who inflicted the knife wounds.  During the scuffle a bag containing a little over one hundred thousand dollars was forcibly taken away from him.  The duo then attempted to flee the scene on foot but was pursued by onlookers in the vicinity.  While the chase ended in front of the park in the downtown area and both culprits apprehended, the sum of money has since been lost to vendors who had a free for all when the bag was torn during the fracas.  They feverishly proceeded to help themselves with money that was strewn across the busy street.  So, while the robbery was foiled, the money has in effect been stolen by residents of the island.  This evening, News Five spoke with proprietor Milo Paz, who explained to us what transpired.

Via Phone: Milo Paz, Businessman

Milo Paz

“Around one-thirty this afternoon, our security guard was doing his daily runs to the bank to deposit and he was ambushed just short of the Belize Bank here in San Pedro. It was two guys; we fully know who they are now because of the people that are cooperating with us. The security guard was stabbed twice and his knapsack was taken and that’s where the deposits were for the day and the robbers got away but the money was not recovered.”

Isani Cayetano

“I understand that a few people who witnessed what happened set chase after the robbers. What transpired in the process of so doing?”

Via Phone: Milo Paz

“When some Good Samaritans were trying to help us—because the security guard was stabbed so he could not really run behind them—the locals set chase and they did catch the robbers. But unfortunately Isani, when they caught the robbers, the knapsack was torn open in the fight and all the money spilled out and there was a lot of people watching and all the vendors from the Central Park and all the people just rushed the money and took it.”

Isani Cayetano

“Are you at liberty to disclose the dollar amount that was lost in this entire incident?”

Via Phone: Milo Paz

“The deposit was of a hundred and thirty thousand dollars.”

Isani Cayetano

“What are the police saying in respect of this particular investigation?”

Via Phone: Milo Paz

“Well we have really good leads and the police are well aware and abreast of what is happening. And I understand that the people, the culprits are well known individuals in this type of criminal activities. They know who they are looking for and they are investigating and working diligently right now.”

Isani Cayetano

“What is the status of your security officer in terms of his physical and health condition at this moment?”

Via Phone: Milo Paz

“At this moment he is in a critical, but stable condition. He is being taken care of right now. We hope the best for him and he is doing very well.”

Isani Cayetano

“Is there anything that you would want to share with us in terms of either an appeal to have the money returned to you or what have you?”

Via Phone: Milo Paz

“Yes, of course. My appeal would be that these people who picked up the money; it is not theirs. Taking money that is not theirs is still stealing. Be honest people and you know where it came from so just bring it back. That would be my appeal.”

It is expected that charges will be brought against the duo following a police investigation.

Security Guard Stabbed while Robbers Lose $130K in Failed Robbery Attempt

Mr. Milo Paz of Milo’s Center is now appealing to the street vendors and people who took the liberty of helping themselves to the money, to come forward and return the stolen cash.

“It is not their money and keeping it is still stealing,” commented Milo Paz.

Security guard Roberto Assi was rushed to the San Pedro Poly Clinic for treatment to his stab wounds to his upper chest and shoulder. He was in a critical but stable condition after the incident as is now recovering. It is expected that charges will be brought against the two robbers following a police investigation.

First : what was he doing with that much cash??
Second: The obvious < the assailants most likely knew he had the cash.
So I would look for people who knew him.

OK I just noticed that it was One Hundred Thirty Dollars >>not>> $130,000.00

Why would it be anything but the currency of Belize? Try and show some sensitivity - a man has been critically injured doing his job.

They are the main collection agency for several large Belizean companies, largest of all at a guess being BEL where almost everyone pays their Electric Bill around now.

Totally agree with you Phil, people should read the full report before making any comments.

I have a question, if I had paid my electric bill there, will BEL come after me for the payment or will they go after the company I paid it to?
