The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) is pleased to announce that Mr. Clive Myers has been appointed to act in the position of “Director, Marketing and Industry Relations”, as of Monday, December 15th, 2014.

Up until his appointment, Clive served as the BTB’s Destination Planning and Development Coordinator. During his tenure, he was instrumental in commissioning tourism strategies and economic impact studies for implementation as outlined in the National Sustainable Master Plan, as well as in the development and execution of the annual Village Arts Expo. Prior to that, he served as a Local Events and Press Officer at the BTB and as a Creative Arts Development Officer at the Institute of Creative Arts (ICA).

Clive holds a Master’s Degree in Project Management from Drexel University Online. Complementing his academic achievements, he has received certification in the Urban Development Rejuvenation Project, Cultural Tourism Project and has received training in the Global Sustainable Tourism Plan for Destinations.

Director of Tourism, Mrs. Karen Bevans says that Clive’s experience and knowledge make him a key addition to the executive team, “We are very excited to have Clive as the BTB’s Director of Marketing & Industry Relations. I am confident that with his familiarity of the industry, coupled with his drive and passion for the development of tourism and Belize, we will build on our successes and continue to push our mandate forward.”

Affirming those sentiments, Clive says, “I do sincerely anticipate in continuing the mission of the Belize Tourism Board in being a strategic partner in marketing the Belize Tourism Product. Belize has seen a significant growth in overnight and cruise arrivals over the past 3 years and as we move into 2015, the organization continues to thrust forward in growing Belize as a world class, premiere vacation destination, through continuous marketing of the tourism product and enhancing the visitor experience.”

Clive’s involvement in local initiatives and committees such as Youth Voices Belize, Operation Smile, The Next Miss Belize Project, Local Economic Development Project Advisory Committee (LEDPAC) and Belize Music Agency, has helped to hone his leadership skills and build key partnerships with the local community.

Clive will be acting as Director of Marketing and Industry Relations for a six months period, after which he may fully take on the position.

Embarrassment for BTB – Director Marketing Resigns In Controversy

Right now, the Belize Tourism Board is reeling from a developing scandal: one of their senior executives has resigned in the wake of reports that he lied on his resume and job letter.

As we told you 2 nights ago, Alyssa Carnegie vacated her post as BTB's Director of Marketing and Industry Relations to become the communication’s Director for Oceana Belize. The announcement that she joined the conservation organization came in the same day as the announcement from BTB that she was being replaced by Clive Myers.

In the release from two days ago, BTB’s Director of Tourism, Karen Bevans, was quoted as saying, “We are very excited to have Clive as the BTB’s Director of Marketing & Industry Relations. I am confident that with his familiarity of the industry, coupled with his drive and passion for the development of tourism and Belize, we will build on our successes and continue to push our mandate forward.”

That’s a glowing endorsement from the most senior official at BTB, but tonight it is seriously tarnished.

This afternoon, reports emerged that Myers made a misrepresentation on his resume when he said that he completed a Masters Degree at Drexel University in the US. There were also reports that he had also studied at Ashford University Online. Well, checks were done and the results came back that the Universities did not have any record of Clive Myers attending, much less completing a degree at their Universities.

That landed on the desks of the senior execs at BTB and by 4 p.m. today, he had resigned the post, and the report we’ve received says that he has left the BTB.

That was followed by a very sheepish and terse release by BTB which said, quote, “The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) hereby announces that the Ag. Director of Marketing & Industry Relations, Mr. Clive Myers, has tendered his resignation with the As a result, Ms. Karen Pike, Director of Information Management, will be holding over the responsibilities of the Marketing and Industry Relations department, in the interim.” End Quote.

No doubt, there is a major question that is currently unanswered. What happened to the background check, which was to have been done before Myers was hired? Well, BTB isn’t addressing that issue at this time.

This scandal as left the organization in a lurch with the PR Department scrambling to try to find good news coming out of BTB to gloss over the embarrassment. But, what about the man in the middle of all of this, what’s he saying? Well, we spoke with Clive Myers via phone today and while he declined comment, he promised us an interview before the end of the week. We’ve learned anecdotally, that he’s informed other reporters that he is in consultation with his lawyer about what will happen next.

BTB Suspends One, Investigating Others In Wake Of Myers Misrepresentation Meltdown

Yesterday, we told you how Clive Myers, BTB's new Director of Marketing & Industry Relations resigned only 3 days after being officially installed. Well tonight, we've learned more about the reasons behind it.

It happened yesterday when some anonymous whistle-blower went making the media rounds delivering a package of documents detailing that Myers allegedly forged his credentials. The documents say that he never went to Ashford University Online to get his bachelor's degree, like he claimed, and neither did he go to Drexel University to get his master's degree, as he claimed.

We've looked over the documents, and from what we can see, this whistle-blower went to great lengths to verify his credentials, as if determined to expose Myers. The person pulled from official and unofficial sources, including Myers' social media accounts to paint the picture that he crafted an elaborate scheme to misrepresent himself with the intent to get himself hired at prestigious institutions.

Meyers has declined comment to all media houses, saying only that he resigned to protect the integrity of the BTB. We've also confirmed with Karen Bevans, the Director of Tourism, that Myers left of his own free will, before they could even inquire about the credibility of these reports.

What we have learned is that the BTB has been hunting for this whistle-blower, and that the belief is that this person is someone from inside the organization. Sources tell us that 1 person has been suspended and 2 more are being investigated for suspected connection to the leaked documents.

Meanwhile, the scandal rages in the public domain: how could the BTB's Human Resources Department not do proper due diligence on Myers?

The Opposition Party has fiercely condemned the BTB's executive, linking it to the Barrow Administration. They released a statement today saying, quote, "It is grossly embarrassing for Belize that on one day a press release is issued by the Director of Tourism naming Clive Myers as the BTB's dynamic, new Director of Marketing and less than 3 days later, he resigns because he was exposed as having misrepresented his credentials on his resume." End Quote.

Before taking up the post as the Marketing Director, previously he was the Destination Planning and Development Coordinator, where he had influence on BTB initiatives. Before that, he worked at the Institute of Creative Arts within NICH.
