My wife and I are returning to Belize in a couple of months this time by cruise ship. We have no experience in Belize City having only flown in and out of Caye Caulker and water taxi to and from Ambergris Caye. We have decided not to do any tours this trip waiting until we return to Belize for a longer period. Therefore we are looking to stay close by the cruise ship terminal but wanted to venture a little farther then just the Tourism Village. The Smoky Mermaid looks like a good place to eat lunch, does anyone eaten there recently or have any other recommendations?

THANKS!

Riverside is a great spot for lunch. Great food. https://www.facebook.com/riversidetavernbelize/info
There's also Sumathi which is killer food. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sumathi-Indian-Restuarant/345900652116081?sk=timeline

Agree...also research "The Hour Bar", very similar to Riverside Tavern, but with better views and a lovely sea breeze.

The BTL Park is close by - lots of food booths selling all different types of food if "picnic bench" dinning takes your fancy.....lovely park and great sea views/breeze as well.

"Old Belize" is pretty decent too.....restaurant, bar and a small museum attached in the same complex:

charter a taxi (very reasonable) and spend a few hours there
(Taxi suggestions, contact in advance the GREAT drivers listed on my taxi page, they will provide some history and answer questions on the way as well - http://www.belizecity-daytrip.com/taxi )

P.S. have a great time, Belize City is great once you know what to expect!

Thanks, all, how's the walk up to Riverside? Doubt we will taxi this trip, looking for something within an easy walk.

Riverside Tavern is about 1.5 km from the Tourism Village -- just keep walking along North Front Street until it ends. Some of the walk will be on sidewalks, some not. It's just under a half km from the Village to the Swing Bridge, and then about 1 km further to the Tavern. A taxi should be about BZ$6 or $7 each way.
