My husband and I are trying to find a way to travel with our 3 dogs (14lb, 5lb, and 6lb) to San Pedro, since we are moving there. We're not comfortable putting them in cargo, and one of our dogs is too long to meet the airline's requirements for fitting under the seat.

We're desperate to find a solution. We've been trying to find either a private plane or boat to go from Miami to Belize that would allow us to bring our dogs but haven't had much luck. We haven't found any boats that would allow this. The planes that we've found require you to pay for the return trip (for obvious reasons), even though it's a one way trip. That puts us outside of what we could afford. Any suggestions? BTW, driving through Mexico is out due to all of the violence that's occurring there.

Yes, I have a suggestion, you probably do not want to hear it, but here it is. Find a good home for your dogs in the states or wherever you're relocating from and if you feel you must have the companionship of a dog there are plenty (too many) that need to be adopted on AC. We like to think our dogs couldn't live without us but fact is they adjust to new owners rather quickly.

For what it's worth, we've flown numerous times (6?-7?) with dogs from San Pedro to Miami and back over the last 10 years, to bring various dogs to FL for veterinary procedures. All of the trip have gone smoothly w/ the dogs checked below. You'll find that most airline employees are extra polite/helpful when it comes to people's pets (not to mention pets that are all bandaged up after surgery, looking all sad!) Miami is a short trip to Belize... From the time you check you dog/go through screening until the time you clear customs/BAHA on the Belize end, 4 hours or so.

I think you would surprised how nice, and violence free the drive through Mexico is. I have driven through Mexico multiple times, and I have never experienced, or even met anybody, that have experienced any kind of unpleasant situations. Mexicans in general seems more civilized than the drivers you meet on the freeways in California! Violence in Mexico, just like most other places in the world (US included), are very localized, and certainly not in areas you will accidentally find yourself.

Airlines have block out dates for animals during the warmer summer months-ask them.

What kind of dog do you have that's too long? I bring my dachshunds (8lbs and 20lbs) with me on the plane every year with no problems. (And, I only have to pay for them one way since I come down for 6 months at a time, and don't book my return ticket until I'm actually going back to the states.)

If you want to call and chat about another suggestion I have, pm (private message) me, and I'll send you my phone number.

My dog who is too large to fly in cabin travels in cargo with no problems and is happy to do so if that means he travels with us. He runs into his crate. Never had a problem.

Yes, some airline will not transport at certain times of the year but United for instance will and will make sure the pet is in a climate controlled environment. The part of the round trip ticket for your pet is a new one which I've never heard of. Our's flies one way and has on three different airlines. I don't think you can book cargo round trip so maybe that is why I've never heard of this.

One problem may be too many dogs at once but if there are two of you that can be solved by booking separate flights with the large dog in cargo on one of them. I'm thinking it is a max. of two in cargo and two in cabin but I'm not 100% sure.

Realistically you probably have to bite the bullet and go with cargo. It's a crappy experience for them, but he'll only have to do it once in his life. Once you are in SP there are good boarding options on the island for when you take trips elsewhere.

Remember to get your BAHA permits before you come.
