Beloved and well-known Catholic Reverend Kurt Kassebeer, pastor at Our Lady of Guadalupe Co-cathedral Parish in Belmopan, passed away abruptly on Monday night. News Five has learned that Father Kassebeer succumbed to a massive heart attack and a memorial mass was held tonight to celebrate his life. Kassebeer was a celebrated priest and was succeeded at Saint Joseph Parish, where he served for a number of years, by Father Noel Leslie. Father Kurt, as he is fondly known, is remembered in the media for leading a congregation of worshippers to the scene of a road traffic accident which claimed the life of seventy-three-year-old Francesca Vera in February 2005. Vera, a parishioner at Divine Mercy Church, was crossing the highway near miles three and four on the Phillip Goldson Highway when she was knocked down by a sports utility vehicle. At the scene of the fatal accident, Kassebeer would administer the last rights to Vera. In 2010, Kassebeer was transferred to Our Lady of Guadalupe Co-cathedral where he remained as its pastor until the time of his death. His funeral arrangements will be known later.
