San Pedro Cabbie Killed For His Golf Cart

42 year-old Jose Beltran, a San Pedro Taximan better known as Mr. Rigo, became the 7th murder victim in two and a half days. Police found him dead inside his vehicle in the San Juan Area of San Pedro this morning at 10:00. He had been tied up and shot in the head. The senior command of the Police Eastern Division has been on the island for weeks trying to root out the crime problem, and this evening, Senior Superintendent Edward Broaster briefed the media about what they've been able to find out.

He told us just over an hour ago that it appears that his killers targeted this law abiding resident for his taxi, which they planned to use in the commission of a crime:

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster
"We responded, we found the male person with one gunshot wound to the head and our response to the incident, we managed to apprehend one of the main suspects. We've confiscated a boat with a 75 horse power engine that was use as the getaway vessel. We have one main suspect in custody and we are searching for two others."

"Talk to me in terms of the person himself. What kind of individual was he? Did he have a record on the island? Was he known to authorities?"

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster
"He was not known to authorities. It's unfortunate. My sympathies goes out to the family. He seemed to be a law aiding citizen and the investigation continues as to the motive as to why they killed him. We suspect basically that he was killed so that his vehicle could have been use in the commission of a crime."

"Are you able to disclose the details of that crime?"

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster
"Not at this time."

"The crime was carried or was it planned?"

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster
"The crime was not carried out."

"Is your investigation showing that there was a crime being planned?"

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster
"Yes. The victim feet was bound and it definitely appears as if though they were planning to jack his vehicle."

When the news hit the social media, former customers of Jose Beltran gave an outpouring of condolences to his family. They mostly expressed shock that this, their favorite taxi driver, had been killed in this cruel manner.

Taxi driver murdered in broad daylight, his van was to be used in a robbery

Three men are in police custody following the daylight execution of a taxi operator in San Pedro Town, Ambergris, Belize. The victim is 42-year-old Jose Rigoberto Beltran, of an Escalante Area address. He was discovered sometime after 10AM on Tuesday April 28th, with a single gunshot wound to the back of the head inside his cab in a bushy alley at the end of Jewfish Street in the San Juan Area.

A neighbor in the area told The San Pedro Sun that shortly around 10AM, they heard a sound like a firecracker but did not see anything strange. The neighbors said that they still decided to call the police, since the station is just a few hundred feet away from the area. One neighbor said that while in the process of calling the police, they saw a dark-skinned male with a team of Coast Guard officials in the area. Despite the fact that he was bleeding from scrapes, Coast Guard officials released the person and it was not until further checks of the area that authorities discovered the van in the bushes.

By the time Scenes of Crime personnel got to process the area almost four hours later, family members of Beltran and colleagues from the various taxi associations on the island gathered in the area. According to the victim’s brother, Carlos Isais Beltran, they both spoke shortly after 9AM before the two left their home to do their usual taxi runs. “I know him as a hardworking person and we had a very good relationship. We are all in shock over this news. He was happy when he left home because he was sending some money for his children who are living in Belmopan. The family is all sad because we were never expecting news like this” said a very broken Carlos Beltran.

Murdered Taximan Found Dead Inside His Own Vehicle
Residents in the area recall hearing a single gunshot and did not expect to hear the grim news of the body of 42-year-old San Pedro Taximan, Jose Rigoberto Beltran, found inside his own vehicle with one gunshot wound to the back of his head. After experiencing a decrease in criminal activity due to an increace in patrolling, San Pedro, Ambergris Caye was shaken up once again on Tuesday, April 27, 2015. But as police conducted its investigations, the body of Beltran lay inside the taxi van well after 1p.m. parked lagoon-side, into some shrubberly off the road in the San Juan Area. The body of Beltran was discovered by a Coast Guard unit that was patrolling the lagoon, who were flagged down by a man who spotted the taxi van. The crime scene was just around the corner of the San Pedro Police Department and police believe that it is likely that Beltran was subdued, taken to that spot and killed. Police gained knowledge that the criminals needed his vehicle to conduct a robbery.

Popular Cab Driver Found Dead Inside His Van in San Pedro

Jose Rigoberto Beltran

The forty-third murder of the year happened in broad daylight this morning in the San Juan Layout of San Pedro. At around ten this morning, popular taxi-man, forty-two year old Jose Rigoberto Beltran, was found lying in his van off the road, shot once to the back of the head. The grisly execution-style murder has shocked the community, and so has word that he was likely killed simply because criminals wanted to use his van to perpetrate another crime. Mike Rudon was in San Pedro and has the story.

Mike Rudon, Reporting

At around ten this morning, the body of Jose Rigoberto Beltran was found lying in this van, in the bushes off the dirt road. A crowd gathered this morning at the scene of the latest cold-blooded murder, including the family of Beltran which was absolutely shocked to get the terrible news this morning. Carlos Beltran had last spoken to his brother at around nine, and says he was his usual, good-natured, happy self. The next time he saw his brother, it was at this spot after a friend called to tell him the van had been spotted off the road and somebody had been killed.

Carlos Beltran, Brother of Deceased

“I rushed from my house and came to see and the person told me it was my brother and he was the one.”

“Now I know this is tough on you but could you describe to us…I understand that he was shot one time. Have you seen the body?”

Carlos Beltran

“Yeah up to now from a little bit far I recognized the body of my brother.”

Edward Broaster

The body was actually discovered by a Coast Guard unit patrolling the lagoon. Their attention was drawn by a shirtless man who frantically called them to the shore and told them that he made the discovery when he went into the bushes to smoke week. Police believe that it is likely Beltran was subdued and taken to that spot and killed. They say he was killed because his vehicle was needed for a robbery. But it is still early in the investigation and the pieces are still being put in place.

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster, Head, Eastern Division Strike Team

“The information we’re receiving is the fact that the taxi would have been used to commit a robbery. We’re investigating the information as to where the robbery would have taken place. The investigation that we’re carrying out will reveal what transpired between the time they went and got the cab to the point where they got to that location, but we know for sure there was a boat which we have in our custody that was utilized in the suspect fleeing from that area. The taxi-driver was bound by his feet and we have recovered the boat used, and we have recovered some apparel that was used by the suspects in the San Mateo area.”

At exactly two this afternoon, after the body had been in the van for four hours, scenes of crime personnel arrived and began the grisly work of processing the scene, including the blood-splattered interior of the van. Beltran’s family stood waiting nearby, waiting for some answers in what seems an absolutely senseless murder.

Carlos Beltran

“Up to now there is nothing that I can think. I know he is a hard-working person just like myself and we have a very close relation and if we have any little problem we always communicate with each other but up to now he never told me anything and up to now everybody is shocked. We don’t know exactly what happened.”

Carlos Beltran

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster

“We’ve determined that there were three suspects involved in the shooting. We have captured one of the main suspects this morning who resisted and tried to flee, and he was pepper-sprayed by some officers. He’s in our custody at this time and we are seeking two others.”

That main suspect, we were told unofficially, is a member of the Campos family which is currently under intense Police scrutiny on the island. Police actually have three persons detained, including the main suspect, and are looking for two others. They feel that in short order they will have rounded up all who conspired to end the life of this humble, hard-working taxi-man, a father of two.

Carlos Beltran

“Everybody’s sad and we weren’t ready for this and I guess there is no option. Life continues and we have to look after his kids, his family.”

At three-fifteen today, the van was driven back onto the road and the body was removed from the scene and placed in a boat which would transport it to the K.H.M.H. morgue. Mike Rudon for News Five.

It says it was the 7th murder in 2 1/2 days? That can't be right. Please tell me it's not.

disturbing.. but.. not a problem for you. Tourists have no problem.

A little known fact... Women who are overweight tend to live longer than men who mention it...

Damn. I worry that about the crime issues in San Pedro for sure, but I was hoping it hadn't taken that big of a turn. Does the crime issue seem to stay in the south or are the people from the south doing their dirty work up where the nicer parts are? I figure if they are looking to steal, they may choose to do so where the money is so to speak.

So I'm guessing your owned land isn't South or in Town?

I poorly worded that. I didn't mean to imply there's nothing nice on the south side as I know there definitely is. My piece of land is nothing to speak of at all. That being said, I believe the majority of the very rich tourists stay further up on the island and would think that would be a target for crime if thievery is the plan of the criminals. Therefore really damaging the image of the whole island for tourists. I hope that clears things up.
