Teachers Learn About Open Education Management Information System Software

All across the country, teachers, administrators and principals are currently engaged in several training sessions. That is because the Ministry of Education is embarking in its CPD Professional Development training where school leaders are learning to computerize vital information about their students, teachers and schools in the hope that timely interventions can be put in place.

Today we stopped by at the Orange Walk Technical High School where these educators were learning more about Open Education Management Information System. Bernardino Pech, the Research and Planning Coordinator in the Ministry of Education, told us more about the initiative.

BERNARDINO PECH – Research/Planning Coordinator, MOE

“There is a lot of utility with the system and it has been in the pipe line for the past year and it has been customized, the software itself is an open source software which is sponsored by UNESCO and we are in the process of customizing it to fit our needs here in Belize and so far the responses cross the country has been excellent.”

“Why is it important to equip just the principals why not incorporating all the stakeholders?”

BERNARDINO PECH – Research/Planning Coordinator, MOE

“What are taking baby steps we, it is the first time that they are seeing it across the country so we starting with principals and then we will be rolling it out to teacher because teachers will have a role to play on the software as well and really the aim is that it will assist us greatly facilitating our access to data first of all so that we can make inform decisions in the past if I tell you for example the way we have been collecting educational statistics in the past we send out a paper form to school who have to fill it out by a certain time and they send it back to the ministry and then we take some time out to do some verification to see if the data is actually accurate then we go back and do some data entry by the time we have any meaningful statistics half the school year is over now thorough the system and of course we still have to do verification to ensure that the data is accurate but we will have that data In a much faster period of time in fact it will be in real time data so you will be able to tell in a particular school so these reports will come in and sometimes it will say half the students in “x” school aren’t present we can easily verify that and confirm that at the ministry level and so we will be able to put any strategy to address whatever issues maybe happening anywhere within the educational system at any point in time.”

Coordinator in the Ministry of the Education, Jesus Dominguez, says this week’s training has the participation of secondary school leaders and teachers whose aim is to provide quality education at all levels.

JOSE DOMINGUEZ – COORDINATOR, MOE

“We are having the MS view which is piloted and which is a component of the quality schools framework and also we are having centering instructions and we are having CPB’s for secondary schools in discipline areas teacher assessment, all of these is to prepare teachers so that when they come in September they are equipped with an additional tool to better perform, to better deliver within the classroom.”

“How will this impact the results in terms of performance at the school at the end of the day?”

JOSE DOMINGUEZ – COORDINATOR, MOE

“At the end of the day we are looking at whereby teachers have been prepared but it will not be a one shot thing we are looking at what the problem is, analyzing the problem and come with an intervention to address that problem, not looking at the symptom of the problem but looking at the root cause of the problem because at the end of the day we want to ensure that our students, our children get a quality education regardless of which school they are in but at the best of the best so that teachers can perform so they can know where they can go for help and address the situation.”

The training sessions end on Friday.
