"Word" is that Jose Mahill was "brutally" murdered while operating his
water taxi yesterday.
We are all waiting for more details.

Jose was a good friend of mine for years. He was the water taxi operator I
was mentioning last week in regards to "trying" ethanol as replacement fuel
for his business.

Jose was a relatively young man and well thought of by all.

We are going to miss him --

Jose is from San Juan -- East side of Bacalar Chico -- North Eastern
Ambergris Caye. My best adviser regarding fishing that area of Belize.

He was truly at home on the seas.

For sure -- San Pedro is in mourning today.

I did not know Mr. Mahill but I am very sorry for this.
Does anyone know the circumstances regarding this tragic death?
Was he attacked at sea or on shore? Has anyone been arrested?
If there are offshore robbers operating down there, I'd like to know about it so I can warn my husband to be extra alert, as he is sailing our boat down to San Pedro in a few days. Any specifics on what to look out for in the area would be greatly appreciated so if you have info please post. If you don't want to post it for some reason please email me privately at: susangg@garcia.mpowermail.com

New is trickling -- but un-official. There is still a news black-out in
effect.

Mahill was charted by a single "Whiteman" in Coro to go fishing around the
flats by San Pedro.

The San Pedranos found the boat with both Mahill and his brother inlaw dead
- -floating abandoned.

Mahill shot twice -- once in the stomach -- once in the head.

The brother in law -- once in the head.

No sign of the "shooter" -- no one has a clue who that is -- why -- etc.

Very strange business indeed.

The news blackout on this event is incredible as so many people in San
Pedro and Corozal know about this.

All this since yesterday morning.

The only thing I heard today was it was drug related and was apparently a drug deal gone bad.

As with many things here this is just a rumor at this point.

Love FM just announced the murder. Mahill found floating in Boca Chica area
- -then the next days his brother in law.

Mahill shot in gut -- his bother in law in head.

The boat was also recovered.

A general description of the "WhiteMan" and that there is a large police
effort to find him -- or even who he was.

The boat left Corozal Monday midday -- a Mexican Ponga style skiff -- 26
footer -- with a single 150 HP Yamaya.

Fishing charter.

News should be on the WWW site here in Belize soon -- starting with Love FM.

Lot's of people very sad -- crying -- over this -- including my wife. We
had spent an enjoyable evening with Mahill just two days before.

So full of life -- now so dead. He was 27 years old ---

Channel 5 News Online report of the murders:

Two Corozal men killed gangland style
Two men from Corozal are dead, believed to have been killed by a man who chartered their boat for a trip to San Pedro. Twenty-seven year old tour operator Jose Majil and his brother in law, Alejandro Arevalo, left Corozal around midday Monday in a white skiff named "Baby Girl". The man who chartered the boat, described only as a stocky Hispanic with clear complexion and curly hair, asked to be taken to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. It is not known exactly when the boat reached the island, but on Monday afternoon police were called to the Boca Chico area at the caye's southern tip, where they found Majil's body floating in the water. He had been shot in the abdomen. Also found nearby was the skiff and its one hundred and fifty horsepower engine along with three expended forty-five-calibre shells lying on the floor of the hull. This morning police found Arevalo's body nearby, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Police believe that both men were shot in the boat and tossed overboard. As for the motive, that is as unclear as the whereabouts of the murderer. This type of killing usually leaves the scent of drugs or money and tonight police in Corozal and San Pedro are ruling out nothing.
