NEMO Issues Advisory on Constant Rains and Possible Flooding

The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) issued an advisory Friday evening, with the forecast predicting a significant amount of showers across the country Friday night and over the weekend, and the risk of localized flooding is likely to increase.

The listed areas of concerns are: Sarteneja in Corozal District, Villages along the old Northern Highway in Orange Walk District, Belize City, Gales Point, Mullins River, Sarawee, Hope Creek and Dangriga in the Stann Creek District. It warned people living in Blue Creek and along the Mopan, Macal, Belize, Bladden, Rio Grande and Moho Rivers, whose homes are likely to flood, that it is best to move to higher ground or a community shelter in order to protect life and property.

Drivers are asked to slow down and put on hazard lights when driving through rain and the general public is asked to keep updated with weather reports and NEMO advisories over the weekend. The advisory ends by asking all supporting agencies of NEMO to remain alert as the river conditions and extent of localized flooding continue to be monitored.

FRIDAY, 13th NOVEMBER 2015 as at4:00 p.m.

The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) hereby informs the general public that as the rains continue over the weekend the risk of localized flooding is likely to increase. The forecast is for significant amount of showers over all regions of the country tonight and throughout the weekend.

Areas of concern are Corozal Town;Sarteneja;Orange Walk;villages along the old northern highway;Belize City; the coastal highway; Gales Point; Mullins River;Sarawee, Hope Creek and Dangriga.

People living in Blue Creek and along the Mopan; Macal; Belize; North Stann Creek; Bladden; Rio Grande, and Moho Rivers whose home is likely to flood are being asked to take the necessary precaution to protect life and property, if necessary move to higher ground withfamily or friends or to a community shelter.

NEMO ADVISORY NO. 3

HEAVY RAINFALL AFFECTING BELIZE

SATURDAY, 14th NOVEMBER 2015 as at 12:00 midday

The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) hereby informs the general public that the potential for flooding is increasing mainly for communities living in Blue Creek and along the Mopan; Macal; Belize; North Stann Creek; Bladden; Rio Grande, and Moho Rivers.

Flooded rivers and creeks in the south continue to rise. Bladden River is 12 feet above normal, Temash is 9 feet above normal, water is 6 feet above the Aguacate bridge, 11 feet above the Blue Creek bridge and the road is closed. Jordan is 11 feet above normal.

NEMO TOLEDO COMMITTEE is opening shelters today for people in Bella Vista, Cow Pen, Monkey River, Golden Stream and Blue Creek to assist families affected by flood waters.

The Ministry of Works is addressing road problems in Marcus Canul area-Orange Walk, Santa Elena-Cayo, the coastal highway, St. Margaret's, Cow Pen, and Bella Vista.

The Stann Creek and Toledo Districts Emergency Committees are activated and responding to the needs of the people affected by flood waters. Search and Rescue personnel from the BDF and BASAR are deployed to assist the affected communities.

IMPASSABLE ROADS:

Gracie Rock, Spanish lookout via Baking Pot Ferry and Iguana Creek Bridge (access through Bullet Tree open), the Succothz ferry is closed. Hopkins Sittee River road is impassable to small vehicles, Cow Pen diversion road being prepared by MOW. Road access to Blue Creek, Aguacate and other communities is cut off.

Other flood prone areas of concern are Corozal Town; Sarteneja; Orange Walk; villages along the old northern highway; Belize City; the coastal highway; Gales Point; Mullins River; Sarawee, Hope Creek and Dangriga.

The Belize Coast Guard is on standby to ferry people between Sarteneja and Corozal Town.

People at risk to flooding are advised to take the necessary precaution to protect life and property, move to higher grounds with family or friends or to a community shelter, place important items high above areas likely to flood, reach out to family members and neighbours in need of assistance and keep the authorities informed of your situation. NEMO ADVISORY NO. 5

HEAVY RAINFALL AFFECTING BELIZE

SATURDAY, 14th NOVEMBER 2015 as at 6:00 p.m.

The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) hereby informs the general public that the following areas along the Sibun River namely Franks Eddy, La Democracia, Gracie Rock, Freetown Sibun and Butcher Burns under flood warning as the Sibun River is rising fast. Search and Rescue personnel from BASAR have been deployed to Frank's Eddy on a Search and Rescue mission to assist people in need. Also under flood watch are northern sections of Dangriga Town, Sarawee, and Hope Creek as the North Stann Creek River is at its peak. Other flood prone areas of concern are villages along the old northern highway and the low-lying areas of Belize City.

Potential exist for more flooding for communities along the following rivers: Sibun; North Stann Creek; Bladden; Swasey; Moho; Golden Stream, Rio Grande and Deep River.

Shelters: In Stann Creek there are currently 6 families in one Shelter in Cow Pen, in Toledo in Bladden there are 15 families in the community shelter, and in Golden Stream there are 20 families in 2 shelters. Shelters are being open in Bella Vista and Trio/ Bladden to assist people who need a dry safe place until the water recedes.

Road conditions: The southern highway in areas of Deep River, Swasey and Bladden. The Hopkins-Sittee River road is impassable to small vehicles. Other impassable areas the road leading into Gracie Rock, Spanish lookout via Baking Pot Ferry and Iguana Creek Bridge but the access route through Bullet Tree Falls village is passable. Road access to Blue Creek, Aguacate and other communities is cut off The Roaring Creek Bridge is passable. The Succothz ferry is operational. The Cow Pen diversion road built by the MOW is functional and being used for the shipment of banana to Big Creek.

The NEMO HQ in Belmopan, Stann Creek and Toledo Districts Emergency Committees continue to respond to the needs of the people affected by flood waters. All being assisted by the the BDF Battalion in Fairweather Camp and BASAR. People at risk to flooding are advised to take the necessary precaution to protect life and property, move to higher grounds with family or friends or to a community shelter. Do not wait until it's too late to take action.

Drivers are asked to respect the temporary road closures along the Southern Highway until NEMO announces that the reopening of the Southern highway. Drivers are asked to drive with due care and attention, and to put on their hazard lights when driving through rain. The public is asked to continue pay close attention to all weather reports and advisories.

NEMO ADVISORY NO. 8

FLOOD SITUATION AFFECTING CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN BELIZE

SUNDAY 15 th NOVEMBER 2015 as at 12:00 m.d.

The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) hereby informs the general public that as the water recedes in one area of the affected districts the communities lower down are at risk to flooding.

In the Toledo District, the Southern Highway is now open to all vehicular traffic. People in the shelters and affected communities are being visited and assisted by shelter, relief and health personnel.

People in the Belize River valley and along the old northern highway are asked to remain vigilant and to start making plans for the flood waters as the Belize River is now rising.

Farmers, especially on the old northern highway, with livestock must pay particular attention and start to move their animals to higher grounds before it is too late.

Road conditions: The southern highway is open to all vehicular traffic. Road access through Blue Creek is open, Jordan bridge is passable only with high vehicles. In Bomba the water on the road is rising. Other impassable roads are those leading into Gracie Rock, Spanish lookout via Baking Pot Ferry and Iguana Creek Bridge. The access route through Bullet Tree Falls village via the Bullet Tree Bridge is passable. The Roaring Creek Bridge is also passable. ATM and Barton Creek caves are closed. The wooden bridge across the Macal is closed. People using the Hammock bridge in Calla Creek needs to closely monitor the Mopan River. La Clarrisa Falls road is only accessible to high vehicles. The Succothz ferry is closed. The Cow Pen diversion road built by the MOW is accessible. Digging of drains must be done only after consultation with the utility companies.

People at risk to flooding are advised to take the necessary precaution to protect life and property, move to higher grounds with family or friends or to a community shelter. Do not: cross flooded areas; Do not: touch power lines, electrical wires and electrical equipment in areas that are flooded; and Do not: turn on lights or appliances until an electrician has checked the circuit. Report downed power lines to the authorities. Turn off electricity and gas at the main switch and valve. Upon entering your home be alert for gas leaks. Do not: use matches or an open flame unless you know that the gas is off. Be very careful of wild animals and snakes as the water recedes. Water must be boiled for at least one minute and cooled before drinking if you are not using bottled water. Or use 8 drops of chlorax or bleach to one gallon of water stir it well before use.

Drivers are asked to continue driving with due care and attention and to watch out for debris on the road. Bus operators are asked to ensure their bus drivers refrain from driving through flooded areas. The public is asked to please abide by these advisories.

The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) hereby informs the general public that water running off the mountain pine ridge, the high ground in Cayo and the Mopan and Macal Rivers is affecting and will affect communities in the Cayo and Belize Districts.

Areas of concern are Arenal; Calla Creek; La Clarissa; Siete Millas; Barton Creek; Central Farm; Buena Vista; Providencien; Ramonal; Paslow Falls, Bullet Tree Falls; Santa Familia, Branch Mouth, villages along the George Price Highway, Roaring Creek, More Tomorrow; and in the Belize District, St. Paul’s Bank; Willows Bank, Double Head Cabbage; Bermudian Landing; Isabela Bank; Flowers Bank; May Pen; Burrel Boom; Lord’s Bank; and Ladyville in the coming week. People living in La Democracia; coastal highway community; Gales Point; Mullins River; Gracie Rock, Hattieville; Freetown Sibun, and Butcher Burns are advised to take action to avoid being affected by flood waters. The Belize National Coast Guard will be assisting with coastal visits to assist people in the Belize and Stann Creek Districts as required.

People in the Cayo District, the Belize River valley and along the old northern highway are being strongly encouraged to move higher ground, protect your life, go to a community shelter or seek shelter with family or friends. Get out of areas likely to flood. Do not cross flood waters especially at night. Farmers with livestock take the necessary actions before it is too late. Flood waters are coming down the Belize River which will seriously affect the Belize River Valley.

In Belmopan the NEMO Emergency Committee will be opening Shelters for those persons who wish to seek shelter. In Belmopan the Civic Centre is being opened and for the villages along the George Price Highway from Camalote to Blackman Eddy the community centres recently refurbished by the European Union will be opened. A BDF patrol in a truck from Camp Belizario will patrol to Belmopan including the surrounding Belmopan communities to assist people in need.

NEMO ADVISORY NO. 10

FLOOD SITUATION IN BELIZE

The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) hereby informs the general public that even though the weather is improving flood waters continue to threatened the following communities in the Cayo District: Arenal; Succothz; Calla Creek; La Clarissa; Siete Millas; Barton Creek; San Marcos; Billy White; Central Farm; Buena Vista; Providencien; Ramonal; Paslow Falls, Bullet Tree Falls; Santa Familia, Branch Mouth, villages along the George Price Highway, Roaring Creek, More Tomorrow in the Cayo. All shelterees in Belmopan and Teakettle went home.

People in the following villages must start taking immediate flood response actions; St. Paul's Bank; Willows Bank; Double Head Cabbage; Bermudian Landing; Isabela Bank; Flowers Bank; May Pen; Scotland half-moon; Burrel Boom; Lord's Bank; and Ladyville. Areas of concern are: Bomba, Maskall, St. Anns; Santana; Lucky Strike; Rockstone Pond and Boston. Farmers with livestock MUST take the necessary actions before it is too late. The Willows bank livestock facility is available for use. People living in La Democracia; coastal highway community; Gales Point; Mullins River; Gracie Rock; Hattieville; Freetown Sibun, and Butcher Burns are advised to take note of this advisory. The BDF and the Coast Guard are on standby for river rescue missions.

In the Toledo District the current situation is as follows: Bladen River has receded to 7 ft. above normal, Blue Creek River is at normal level, Temash River (Crique Sarco) is 5 ft. above normal, Aguacate is 2 ft. above normal, Big falls river is 13ft below the bridge and continues to recede, two (2) homes still have about 2 feet of water. One family is sheltering with relatives and the other family is in the community center. In San Miguel the river receded to 3 ft. below the deck of bridge. Six (6) inches of water is still in one of the four homes that were affected. Affected families are staying with relatives.

In Golden Stream all twenty (20) families affected have left the shelter. The relief supplies personnel have assessed all affected household and distributed immediate food relief to twenty (20) homes. In Bladden village twenty nine (29) families are sheltering in the Catholic and the Baptist Church, these families have received water and food. In Bella Vista fifteen (15) families had to be evacuated. In Trio 26 families that were affected received water and food. An overall assessment is being conducted of homes and farms to determine their losses and follow up assistance; including relief distribution and medical visits, which are underway.

Road conditions: All major highways namely, the Philip Goldson, George Price and the Southern Highway are open to traffic from border to border. In Bomba the road is impassable to small vehicles. Other impassable roads are those leading into Gracie Rock, Spanish lookout via Baking Pot Ferry and Iguana Creek Bridge. NEMO ADVISORY NO. 11
FLOOD SITUATION IN BELIZE
MONDAY 16th NOVEMBER 2015 as at 6:00 p.m.

The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) hereby informs the general public that as the water recedes slowly in the Cayo District communities along the Mopan and Macal must take the necessary actions to save life and property. People in the following villages must take note of the threat of flood waters heading their way; St. Paul's Bank; Willows Bank; Double Head Cabbage; Bermudian Landing; Isabela Bank; Flowers Bank; May Pen; Scotland half-moon; Burrell Boom; Lord's Bank; and Ladyville. Also of concern are Bomba, Maskall, St. Anns; Santana; Lucky Strike; Rockstone Pond and Boston. Farmers with livestock MUST take the necessary actions before it is too late. The Willows bank livestock facility is available for use.

The ministry of Human Development and the BDF is currently assisting people along the old northern highway. The Coast Guard remains on standby. Members of the BDF boat section will be deployed on Wednesday to assist people in need. A BDF coastal patrol will visit Punta Negra and Monkey River Town in the morning. today in the Toledo District people in shelter in Bladden, Trio and Bella Vist received cooked food. As the water recedes some people are returning home. All Shelterees in Cow Pen returned to their home. Assessment of homes, farms, follow-up relief and medical checks continue through the work of NEMO relief, housing and shelter, medical and other District committees.

TUESDAY 17th NOVEMBER 2015 as at 6:00 a.m.

The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) hereby informs the general public that communities along the Mopan and Macal must continue to take the necessary actions to save life and property. People in St. Paul's Bank; Willows Bank; Double Head Cabbage; Bermudian Landing; Isabela Bank; Flowers Bank; May Pen; Scotland half-moon; Burrell Boom; Lord's Bank; and Ladyville must maintain a state of heightened alert and take actions to save life and property. Residents along the old northern highway must remain alert. Farmers with livestock are being asked to take the necessary precautions. NEMO District Emergency Relief teams supported by the BDF are providing assistance to people in need.

In the Toledo District people that are in shelter in Bladden, Trio and Bella Vista are being assisted by the District emergency teams. Assessment of homes, farms, follow-up relief and medical checks will continue throughout the day.

The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) hereby urges people in St. Paul’s Bank; Willows Bank; Double Head Cabbage; Bermudian Landing; Isabela Bank; Flowers Bank; May Pen; Scotland half-moon; Burrell Boom; Lord’s Bank; Ladyville; Belama Phase 4, and Crooked Tree to maintain a state of heightened alert. People on the edge of the lagoon be informed that the water is rising. One family had to be relocated this evening. Take action and protect life and property. Tomorrow a BDF Boat with NEMO personnel will deploy to the area.

In the Toledo District the shelter in Trio is closed Shelterees remain in the Bladden and Bella Vista shelters. Assessment of homes, and clean up are underway. Farms assessed so far by the Ministry of Agriculture personnel, indicate that cattle farmers will be needing assistance in Bella Vista and the Belize River Valley. Farmers with livestock are being asked to take the necessary precautions.

The Coastal Road is closed to all traffic. In Bomba the road remain impassable to small vehicles. Gracie Rock road remains closed. In Cayo, as the Macal River recedes, the following crossings are still closed to the traffic: the Spanish lookout roads via Baking Pot Ferry and the Iguana Creek Bridge; Succothz ferry and the low-lying wooden bridge that’s across the Macal River. ATM and Barton Creek caves remain closed. The Buena Vista road is closed but the access route through Bullet Tree Falls village via the Bullet Tree Bridge is passable; the Roaring Creek Bridge remains open. La Clarissa falls road is now open to traffic. People using the Hammock bridge in Calla Creek needs to be careful. Digging of drains must be done only after consultation with the utility companies.

People at risk to flooding are being strongly encouraged to protect life, seek shelter with families or friends or go to a community shelter. Get out of areas likely to flood. Do not cross flood waters especially at night. Drivers are reminded to drive with due care and attention. NEMO continues to monitor the Belize River Valley and assist flood victims in the affected communities.

NEMO Warns Residents in Flood Prone Areas

The rains continue to be sporadic over various parts of the country and are making it somewhat difficult for the flood prone areas to go back to normal. The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) continues their efforts in monitoring the situation in various parts and just before five o'clock this evening they issued a Supplementary Advisory. In that release, NEMO has urged people in Flowers Bank, Bamboo Patch and Texas Road Areas, St. Paul's Bank; Bermudian Landing; Isabela Bank; May Pen; Scotland half-moon; Burrell Boom; Lord's Bank; Ladyville; Crooked Tree; Belama Phases 3 and 4 to continue taking appropriate actions in view of the rising flood waters in their area. In Belama Phases 3 and 4 CEMO will be assisted by the BDF to ferry people over the bad spots which are impassable to small vehicles.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the Coast Guard, NEMO and Area Representative had visited the residents in Gracie Rock and Freetown Sibun and today, the BDF and NEMO personnel are doing follow up assessments in those areas. The Coastal Road remains closed to traffic. In Bomba the road is impassable to small vehicles. Freetown Sibun road is closed. The Crooked Tree causeway is open. In Cayo the Spanish lookout road via Baking Pot Ferry is closed. The Buena Vista road going to San Marcos is still closed. The Succothz ferry is closed. ATM and Barton Creek caves remain closed.

Meanwhile, the following crossings and roads are open: the Roaring Creek Bridge; the Iguana Creek Bridge; the low-lying wooden bridge across the Macal River; the access route through Bullet Tree Falls village via the Bullet Tree Bridge; La Clarissa falls; the Hammock bridge in Calla Creek and Guacamallo Bridge. In Toledo, Trio road is open to high vehicles only. The Monkey River and Boom Creek roads are still closed. A total of 30 persons are in shelter in Bella Vista. An assessment team will be checking on them tomorrow to determine if they can return to home.

The Ministry of Human Development personnel from the Relief Supplies Committee completed their assessment of families in all affected communities. Thirty- nine (39) families in Bladden and five (5) families in Trio were assisted. Thirteen (13) families in Bella Vista will be assisted if necessary over the weekend. Damage Assessment teams had to discontinue their assessments of farms due to flood waters. The concern, until the flood waters recede, remain the impact on livestock. The Damage Assessment teams are scheduled to continue on Monday. People at risk to flooding are being strongly encouraged to protect life, stay out of areas likely to flood and do not cross flood waters especially at night. NEMO continues to monitor the flood situation in the Belize District and to assist flood victims in the affected communities.
