A number of stakeholders in the tourism industry are concerned about a proposed route to Lamanai Archaeological Site in the Orange Walk District. Reporter Judy Turton has the story.

In the month of September during his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Dean Barrow announced that Government will be constructing a new road to Lamanai via Bermuda Landing in order to boost the tourism sector in the area. While this might have come as good news for many, for tour guides, tour operators and hotel and restaurant owners of the north, this came as bad news. The constructing to of the road automatically means that tourist will no longer need to travel all the way into Orange Walk to access Lamanai Ruin either by road or by boat.

But thatís not all the bad news. Reports are that currently trenching is taking place on the southern part of the Lamanai Lagoon that will allow the passage of boats to take tours to Lamanai. And this is what has Belize Tourism Industry Association upset since they were not informed about the project.

A new road to Lamanai

In his independence day address, Prime Minister Dean Barrow announced that the government will be investing in the construction of a road to Lamanai via Lemonal village. Since that announcement the construction on the road has already commenced.

The work commenced on November the 6th and work is well advanced to see the hotmixing of 7 miles of road from the intersection of Bermudian Landing to Lemonal Village. The contractor, Rodla Construction Company estimates that the road will be completed by April of next year.

With the completion of the road, it will open a new access way to Lamanai which will significantly cut the travel time to this archaeological site.
