Joel Borland, a member of the DigiCell cycling team, won the 26th annual Krem New Year’s Day cycling classic in solo fashion, crossing the finish line in 3:55:42, well over 30 seconds before a group of riders came sprinting in for second place.
The 90-mile ride started at the northern border and finished shortly after 1:00 p.m. on Central American Boulevard, near its junction with Mahogany Street.
Gregory Lovell, also of Team DigiCell, edged out Byron Pope of Benny’s Megabytes for second place.
In the female category, Belize Bank’s Alicia Thompson outsprinted C-Ray’s Kaya Cattouse in a photo-finish to successfully defend her title. Cattouse later blamed an escort police mobile of getting in her way during the sprint at the finish.
