A laborer from San Pedro is dead, allegedly as a result of too much alcohol leading to a long drop into a shallow creek. The body of Fernando Melendez was discovered in a creek near an illegal crossing between Melchor and Benque. Preliminary investigation suggests the Melendez tried to make the crossing in the dead of night after hours of partying, and that’s when he slipped. Today Benque Police told News Five that the body was discovered by relatives who got concerned when Melendez did not answer their phone calls.
On the Phone: Insp. Stanley Bowden, Deputy O.C., Benque Viejo Formation
“Benque Viejo Police acted on information received of a body found in a creek about two hundred yards from the Mopan River. CIB personnel visited the scene where on arrival an apparent dead body of a male person was seen wearing a black shirt and blue short pants. He was seen lying on his left side in the shallow water of the creek. The body was identified to be that of Fernando Melendez, 47 years old, a Belizean labourer of San Pedro Town. The body appeared to have bruises on the left side and upper center of the head. Initial investigations revealed that Fernando came from San Pedro on Thursday, February 11th to visit his mom in Benque Viejo Town. While celebrating her birthday he went to Melchor de Mencos around 4:00pm that day to socialize. Sometime Thursday night he came back to Benque Viejo through the bushes which are area for illegal crossing. Apparently he fell from the edge of the creek which is about fifteen to twenty feet high. Relatives tried to contact him on Friday and when they couldn’t make contact with him they started searching the area.”
Police do not suspect foul play, but are awaiting a post-mortem examination scheduled for Tuesday before they make an official determination.
