At last! There's a vaccine for dengue fever that appears to be highly effective. The vaccine, developed by the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. and called TV003, has proved 100% effective in preventing dengue in one clinical trial.
It is now in large scale tests in Brazil. If these tests substantiate its effectiveness, it will be made available for use throughout the world, including Belize. Dengue kills 25,000 people a year worldwide. An additional plus: Since the Zika virus appears related to dengue and is transmitted by the same mosquitoes, the dengue vaccine may be helpful in developing a Zika vaccine.
