A large shipping container filled with garbage was reported to have turned over near the San Pedro Solid Waste Transfer Station in Southern Ambergris Caye. The incident left a massive pile of trash along the road; spilling into the mangroves and floating into the nearby water ways. The mountain of filth sat at the location for over a week before any action was taken to rectify the situation.

Several attempts were made to get the container on its wheels by using a 50-foot excavator, but to no avail. The next day a crane was brought in, and that did the job in a matter of minutes. However, the problem was not completely solved, as the garbage remained untouched. The San Pedro Sun reported the incident to the Hol Chan Marine Organization as well as the local municipal authorities at the San Pedro Town Council. Both committed to follow up on the issue and make the necessary reports after their investigations; but upon following up, the garbage remains where it fell.

In a final attempt to address the issue, The Sun notified the Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWM) in Belmopan. Headquarters personnel were unaware of the situation, but began making arrangements to get the situation solved. The BSWM informed The San Pedro Sun that the container belongs to PASA Belize Limited ( a Mexican waste management company), which is the firm in charge of the operation of the transfer station in Ambergris Caye, and which barges the garbage to the sanitary landfill on the mainland.

Reynaldo Hernandez, PASA's Manager, visited Ambergris Caye after the incident to ensure certain mechanisms were in place to avoid a similar incident. During his visit, he spoke with The San Pedro Sun about the issue and what they are doing to be more effective in the future. "We have come up with a backup plan in order to respond more efficiently in the future," said Hernandez. "The plan is to bring additional equipment from the mainland to have readily available if similar events like this occur. This will speed our response to any accidents that involve the threat of solid waste materials." He added that the plan of action is in its development stage and once complete, the local municipal authorities will be notified about it. It is expected that the idea will also allow the involvement of local authorities in working together with PASA to assist them whenever it may be necessary.

An assessment report from the Department of the Environment is to yet be released. The report should confirm if there was any environmental impact on the water ways and mangroves that line the road. Currently PASA is the firm in charge of the operation of the transfer station in Ambergris Caye, which barges the garbage from the island to the sanitary landfill on the mainland. BSWM not only has the responsibility to ensure that PASA complies with all operations of the transfer station, but with the environmental compliance plan as well.

BSWM would like to once again remind the general public that for any similar situations, or to learn more about their operations, they can be contacted at 822-0711 or 802-1527 or via email at [email protected]

Recently terminated a solid waste hauler (trucker) who we discovered was taking bags of trash to a vacant lot in San Mateo. We were clear with him not to do this, but he did it anyway. Check the whole chain of events when you send your trash away.
Joker (boat hauler) does it right, taking things to the trash truck. I use him for my household waste and his service is good.

'Check the whole chain of events' is especially true when you pay someone to pump out your septic. If they can't show you a receipt from dumping it at the processing station, it means they dumped it on the side of the road or in the lagoon.
