A 39-foot Mainship Trawler named ‘Connie Sue’ has run into the barrier reef in front of San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye. The incident occurred on Wednesday, June 15th, around 7PM. It is evident that damages to the reef are significant, but no assessment has been concluded as investigations continue following the shipwreck.

The American registered vessel was captained by 66-year-old Roger Day, who was heading to the United States of America from Guatemala. When approaching Ambergris Caye, the vessel’s engine began giving trouble and the vessel started taking in water. Day then decided to head to shore but with no knowledge of the waters near the island and his navigational equipment not adjusted to recognize the channels of the reef, he ended up grounding on the reef itself. Day then sent out a SOS call, which was answered by personnel from Amigos Del Mar, Tour Operator who brought him to shore.

US Vessel Is Off The Reef

And keeping it on the environment, On Last week Thursday, we told you about the 40 foot US vessel which ran aground on the reef just east of San Pedro town.

It happened on Wednesday night at around 7 o'clock, when the vessel, Connie Sue, started having engine problems. Her captain, 66 year-old Roger Day, who was heading to the United States from Guatemala, immediately radioed in for help, and he was rescued by the employees of Amigos del Mar.

But, the damage was done to the reef which was raked by the ship. The Authorities have since taken it off the reef, and the captain, Roger Day has been taken before the court for the incident. We understand that a preliminary damage assessment has been done, and it has been submitted to the court as well.

Inclement Weather Deters Officials from Assessing Damages to Reef

June 15, 2016, local authorities were called out to an area facing Ambergris Caye where a 39-foot trawler had ran into the reef after experiencing mechanical failure. The captain of the vessel, 66-year-old, Roger Day was arraigned in court on Thursday, June 16 with damage to the Belize Barrier Reef system. The recent weather conditions, however, have hampered the officials at the Department of the Environment to carry out an assessment of the damages caused to the reef. The vessel has since been removed and was taken to a marina in San Pedro Town but it is expected that the vessel will soon be transferred to the Belize Coast Guard headquarters. While the captain is awaiting the assessment to be concluded so his court charge could be amended to reflect how much he will be fined, Love News understands that the cost of damages could range anywhere between five thousand to twenty five thousand per square metre of the reef and that would depend on the health, state and density of the reef. The incident occurred at about seven o’clock at night. According to Captain Day, the American registered vessel, named Connie Sue, was heading to the United States from Guatemala.
