A man is struggling to stay alive after he was shot on San Pedro. 30 year old Dwayne Hyde was heading to his common law wife's home this morning at around 12:30. But he wasn't alone, he was being followed by 3 men. As soon as he got to the house, he saw the men in the yard. That is when Hyde and one of the men, who he knows as Luis ‘Wizz" Carter got into a fight. Carter drew his gun and shot Hyde in stomach but Hyde got a chance to grab a screwdriver and stabbed Carter 4 times. Today police told us what they know so far.

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood - PR, Eastern Division North
"Something around 12:30 am Mr. Dwayne Hype ran home and he had to bang on his door because he was in hot pursuit by some persons that wanted to harm him. By the time his common law wife opened the door to their residence he was shot somewhere in the abdomen and he was transported to the KHMH where is undergoing treatment as we speak. How the stabbing came about we believe that one of his assailants was stabbed with a screwdriver. We cannot determine as yet who inflicted that wound to one of the assailants but we know that one of the person out of the 3 attackers was known to the victim and the common law."

Sources say that this incident was likely as a result of a drug deal gone wrong. Hyde, who is originally from Roaring Creek, is in a very critical condition at the KHMH. As for the alleged shooter, Carter, he has been treated for his stab wounds and is detained. He will be charged for attempted murder. One other person has also been detained. Island police say they couldn't have solved the crime without the help of towns people who came forward with information.

Island Vice

Regularly on the news you hear about police finding wholesale quantities of marijuana. But, San Pedro police came up with an Island twist on that everyday drug.

At 4:00 this morning, based on special branch intelligence, the quick response team did a few raids and hit the jackpot when they found cocaine, hashish, ecstasy and cannabis at an apartment on Sea Grape Drive. Police arrested 27 year old waiter Juslyn Daniels and a minor. They have been charged with two counts of trafficking for one pound of cannabis, AND 26.1 grammes of cocaine, and possession of controlled drugs for the 27.2 grammes of hashish and 0.7 grammes of ecstasy.

Wizz is Remanded for Attempted Murder in San Pedro

Also in the Magistrate Court today, a construction worker from San Pedro Ambergris Caye, was arraigned for a mid-week shooting on the island.  Twenty-three year old Luis Carter, also known as “Wizz”,  a resident of the San Pablo area is facing charges of attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm and dangerous harm with a deadly weapon upon Dwayne Hyde. He was additionally charged with aggravated assault with a firearm upon Hyde’s common-law-wife, Kimberly Humes.  In the wee hours of Wednesday, Hyde was shot to the abdomen, allegedly by one of three men who followed him to his house.  According to a report given to police by Hyde’s common-law-wife, Humes says she heard a knock at her front door and when she opened it, Hyde told her that his life was under threat. He was allegedly being pursued by one of three men and in a subsequent struggle, he was shot to the abdomen. Hyde identified his attacker as Carter, who today appeared before Senior Magistrate, Sharon Fraser. The suspect has remanded to the Belize Central Prison until August thirty-first, 2016.

Dwayne Hyde succumbs to gunshot injuries

After he was injured in a shooting incident two weeks ago, Dwayne Hyde succumbed to his wounds on Wednesday, July 27th. The 30-year-old mechanic from the Escalante Subdivision of San Pedro Town had been recovering at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) in Belize City, but in recent days, his health deteriorated, leading to his death.

His attacker, Wizz, was formally arrested and charged for attempted murder, and remanded to the Belize Central Prison. However, given the fact that Hyde passed away, police are expecting to charge him with murder in addition to his actual charge, after consulting with the Director of Public Prosecution. Hyde’s death marks the sixth murder for San Pedro Town in 2016.

Louis “Whiz” Carter, 33, now charged with murder

A San Pedro man who was charged with attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm and dangerous harm in connection with a shooting incident that occurred on July 13, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, where a charge of murder was read to him.

Louis “Whiz” Carter, 33, was arraigned on the murder charge by Magistrate Carlon Mendoza. He was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until his next court appearance on October 12.

Carter was initially charged with the attempted murder of Dwayne Hyde, 30, and aggravated assault upon Hyde’s common-law wife, Kimberly Humes.

Carter was remanded to prison when he was arraigned on the attempted murder and other charges on Friday, July 15, when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser.

Carter, however, with the assistance of his attorney, Anthony Sylvestre, filed a bail application at the Supreme Court, and his bail application was scheduled to be heard by Justice John “Troadio” Gonzalez on Tuesday.

At the appointed hour, however, crown counsel Rene Montero informed the court that he had spoken with the arresting officer in the case, who had informed him that the charge against Carter had been upgraded to murder, because Dwayne Hyde had died on Wednesday, July 27.

Sylvestre, however, was not so certain and was hesitant to withdraw his client’s bail application, but Justice Gonzalez told him that he did not believe the prosecutor would try to deceive the court with false information.

Sylvestre, having heard the Judge’s view of the matter, stood down the bail application.

Judge Gonzalez agreed and Carter’s bail was not heard.

On Wednesday, July 13, 2016, in San Pedro at around 12:30 a.m., Dwayne Hyde, a resident of the island, was shot in the abdomen, allegedly by one of three men who followed him to his house in the Escalante Division, DFC area.

Hyde’s common-law-wife, Humes, who was allegedly assaulted by one of the gunmen, told police that she was at home when she heard a knock at their front door and when she opened the door, she saw Hyde, who told her that his life was under threat.

Hyde, a mechanic, had allegedly been pursued by three men, one of whom entered his yard, and after a brief encounter with his attacker, a struggle ensued and Hyde was shot once in the abdomen.

According to the report given to police, during Hyde’s struggle with his attacker, he identified his attacker to be one “Whiz,” who was reportedly stabbed three times in the neck, mouth and abdomen during his struggle with Hyde.
