Wolfe’s Woofer: The Loan
“I don’t want to go around paying bills with you,” I told Sherry. “Drop me off at Celi’s Deli and I’ll meet you on the deck of the Holiday Hotel when you get back.” As I enjoyed my coffee and the view of the reef I peacefully read my book. “Mr. Dennis! Mr. Dennis!” I looked up to see Marvin trotting up the beach towards me. “Have a seat, Marvin,” I said, after he made his way up on the deck. “You are just the man I wanted to see,” he said. “Marvin, are you drunk?” I asked. “Why you ask that?”

Doctor Love: Two Choices and Wardrobe Woes
Dear Doctor Love, I am sixteen years old and my boyfriend is twenty years old. He goes to the bar almost every night and gets drunk, and so I broke up with him. When I did, my boyfriend’s friend told me he was in love with me and asked me would I date him. I told him I do not like him that way and miss my ex. But I worry if I wait and let them both go, they will find other girls. That will leave me alone without anyone. I like having a boyfriend. /s/Two Choices

In Search of Vegetarian Food in Belize
Food Republic went looking for good vegetarian food all around Belize, and found the best right here in Cayo. Roots Wraps and Smoothies gets a great review, from their tostadas to their burgers. "The backpacker town of San Ignacio is considered the heart and soul of the Cayo district, and it was here that I first discovered the variety of Belize’s vegetarian food. Despite its small size, San Ignacio has an excellent vegan/vegetarian cafe, Roots, Wraps & Smoothies, where the light, flavorsome food and fresh, healthy juices are the perfect antidote to the stifling summer heat. I first tried the green tostadas: fried corn tortillas topped with basil hummus, lettuce, salsa frecca, balsamic vinegar reduction and vegan Parmesan cheese. Washed down with a freshly made and perfectly zingy carrot, orange and ginger juice, it left me feeling refreshed rather than bloated, as has become the new norm (the amount of pasta, pizza, bread and fries I’ve eaten while traveling has tripled)."

Catholic Auxiliary Bishop calls for teachers to return to classrooms
The Auxiliary Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Belize, Christopher Glancey, released a video this week, calling on teachers to bring an end to the strike and return to their classrooms. Glancey explained that after several meetings between himself, Bishop Dorrick Wright, and the Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Leon Kalenga, the diocese agrees that the teachers should reopen the schools. Glancey added that there are other ways for teachers to continue their campaign for good governance, and the Church would be willing to assist if the teachers so choose that route. He went on to say that the Church would offer its facilities to teachers who would wish to meet with members of the public to air out their concerns over the points made in their eight demands to the government.

A Gorgeous Day for Some Delicious Food: The New Farm House Deli & Belize Chocolate Company
Yesterday turned into a gorgeous HOT October day. I was headed south – Ian Anderson was making the announcement of a REAL DELI on the island. The Farm House Deli at Mahogany Bay…projected to open in December of 2016. We arrived about 10 minutes after the start time (in Belize time WAY EARLY) and Ian was making a champagne toast to a good sized crowd. The whole bottom floor with be the Farm House Deli. For those of you not familiar with Mahogany Bay Village, it is an ENORMOUS project about 2 miles south of town. They are completing the 195 cottage style room hotel now and projected to open in the new year. But it is not just a hotel…it is a village. There will be homes, restaurants (a Japanese sushi chef has already signed on), a deli, shops, a aquaponic greenhouse, a salon, a diving shop, a gym, a rental place for golf carts and bikes, pools, a large beach on the leeward side of the island…

Insect investigation
The jungle of Belize served as an IUPUC biology student’s classroom this summer. There he hoped to discover a wider array of mayfly species than what is currently known. David Cool, a North Vernon resident, spent the end of June in the mountainous Central American country to study mayflies, a group of insects that live in fresh water. He joined researchers from Sonoma State University and the University of California-Davis, which were there studying a variety of insects. Cool got his interest in mayflies from IUPUC assistant professor Luke Jacobus, who has studied the insects for 18 years. Mayflies are important for a variety of factors, including being a food source for fish, birds and other animals, and as bio-indicators, Jacobus and Cool said. “Mayflies are very sensitive to many changes in their immediate environment and they are used to monitor environmental health,” Jacobus said.

The sinking of the Edward Hines
The steamship L. Edward Hines set sail from New Orleans on Oct. 7, 1916, carrying tens of thousands of dollars' worth of lumber to Colon, Panama. It held a crew of 23 men – many of them from New Orleans. It was its first voyage from the Crescent City, but it was also its last. Several days after it set out, the Hines was buffeted by a hurricane. The crew members battled to stay afloat for hours, but to no avail. The wooden ship was ripped to shreds and sank in the wee hours of the morning Oct. 15, about 50 miles off the coast of what is now Belize. The men aboard the ship were thrown into the sea. Among them was engineer Axel F. Dahlstrom, 46, of New Orleans. Dahlstrom clung to a piece of wreckage in solitude for two days and two nights, then drifted close to a piece of wreckage holding two of his crewmates, Frank McCrystal and B. Linquist. The three men floated aimlessly for four more days before their makeshift raft became lodged on a reef. A fisherman rescued them there and took them to the hospital at Stann Creek, now known as Dangriga.
