The tourism industry is Belize's biggest foreign exchange earners, and at a time when citrus, bananas and shrimp are all suffering downturns, tourism is the only bright spot in an otherwise bleak economy.
The BTB reports that since June of last year, the number of tourists coming to Belize has been steadily increasing. This September saw a dramatic 26.9% increase in tourists compared to September 2015. So far this year, the number of overnight tourists has increased 16.4% compared to last year, and despite fewer cruise ships coming to Belize since Hurricane Earl, even that sector saw a 1.3% increase.
Tourism numbers are expected to continue to increase as direct flights from Toronto to Belize begin next month.
