San Pedro Fishing Association president calls for unity among fishers
Efforts to revive a dormant fishing association in San Pedro Town have been fruitless over the past years. The defunct association saw its opportunity to start once again when new members were elected during a meeting held in mid- February of this year. Enrique Marin was elected president, along with six other members tasked in solving the main issues affecting the local fishing industry. However, despite pumping young and active members into the association, poor support and commitment from members has the organization stagnant once again. At the time of his appointment, Marin pledged to address the many difficulties affecting island fishers, which included the reinforcement of fisheries regulations, illegal fishing and even the proper issuing of fishing licenses. Upon listening to the award winning radio drama Punta Fuego, which airs on the local radio station, Love FM on Wednesday evenings, Marin says he encouraged some of his fellow fishing folks to follow it since it provides useful and up-to-date information regarding Belize’s fisheries industry. At Punta Fuego, a fictional fishing village somewhere along the coast of Belize, the fishing industry is everyone’s way of life, but it is threatened by illegal and unsustainable fishing activities by dishonest fishermen and even corrupt fisheries officials. But despite all these threats affecting the industry, there are people who care about sustainable fishing and are trying their best to salvage the industry. Such characters like Richie Valencia encourage fishers to attend and participate in fisheries related meetings, and to respect the fisheries regulations while explaining the long term benefits associated with responsible fishing.

Ambergris Caye is ready for Canada’s WestJet
Ambergris Caye is getting ready to welcome the arrival of a new airline to Belize. The popular Canadian air carrier, WestJet will start offering twice-weekly non-stop flights between Toronto’s Pearson Airport (YYZ) and Belize’s Philip S.W Goldson International (BZE) beginning Saturday, October 29th. All those lay overs in the continental United States will finally come to an end, thus making Belize even more accessible to Canadians who are looking forward to escaping from the pending winter weather. WestJet joins Southwest and Copa Airlines, who began flying to Belize a year ago. Ambergris Caye, which is considered the top destination for visitors in Belize, has been counting the days for the service to start. A few businesses in San Pedro Town stated that they are ready to welcome the new visitors and make sure their stay on La Isla Bonita is the best. A few restaurants downtown, such as Caliente, commented that they are excited and their staff is ready to provide the excellent service they are known for. Estel’s Dine by the Sea acknowledges that with more tourism on the island, residents will have access to more jobs, as the demand for additional services increases. Both establishments on the beach offered some of the best food in local and international cuisine, and are ready to serve. Hotels such as Spindrift, Sun Breeze, Ramon’s Village, Caribbean Villas and Xanadu all expressed their satisfaction on WestJet’s entry into the popular North-American-Belize market. They all shared one common sentiment. “We are prepared to pamper the new arrivals from Canada with the best hospitality the island has to offer.”

The importance of declaration of assets and liabilities in politics
An ever-growing number of countries have adopted ethics and anti-corruption laws that require public officials to declare their assets and income before or after taking government positions. In Belize according to the 1994 Prevention of Corruption in Public Life Act, certain government officials must file financial declarations with the Integrity Commission established in that same year. However, such body has been defunct since 2011. The principal goal of income and asset disclosure systems is to combat corruption, and even though the system has not been functioning in the country for the past six years, a major development took place during the fifth anniversary of National Service Day on September, 19th in Belmopan (commemorating the passing of the party’s paramount leader, George Cadle Price). While members of the Opposition People’s United Party (PUP) want to pump life into the Commission, local politicians on the island have different views about this practice.

Audacity and Absurdity – PUP wants PM Barrow to Resign over BTL?
By Delroy Cuthkelvin: That PUP politicians, of all people, would be calling for the resignation of our Prime Minister over the settlement of the BTL nationalization and compensation award is, to say the least, preposterous. Preposterous, we say, because were it not for the PUP, there would be no need for any such nationalization, compensation or settlement. One of the most profitable companies in our country’s post-independence history, BTL was created in 1987-1988 by the first UDP Administration through the merger of Cable &Wireless and Belize Telecommunication Authority (BTA). The company’s original Articles of Association prohibited any individual or entity from owning more than 25 percent of BTL’s shares, except for the Government or some “permitted person” acting on its behalf.

I loved the swim thru’s. Coco Beach House Reef was cool. I had a lot shark interaction there, which was a lot of fun. During the week, the surge was abnormal and it was difficult to shoot steady footage. I did the best I could under the conditions.
