Hey all -

So my wife and I came down and visited a while back and frankly fell in love with the place, and are gearing up for a move. A typical enough story around here, I'm sure. Regardless, I've been hanging out on the forums and I've noticed what seems to be a serious upswing in violent crime. Half the posts on the first page are stabbings, muggings, shootings, etc.

Did anything change, or is this some sort of anxiety driven confirmation bias I'm experiencing? What's the state of Ambergris?

Things are fine. Sure we can do better on many levels, but it's a lovely community! Media reports the things we don't learn about on our own and uses their important platforms to raise awareness of things that are out of the ordinary.

Every day I am knocked out by the beauty and serenity of my surroundings. After 24 years I still don't take if for granted. Trust your instincts. If you love the island, she will love you back.

I am very curious about vacationing on the island solo. The recent events have me concerned. Any advise for an American tourist traveling solo on the island?

Violent crimes against tourists are very, very rare. Hundreds of thousands of tourists from North America visit Belize annually and most come to Ambergris Caye. We have crime. We have too much crime. Most of that crime is property related and non violent. Violent crime tends to involve those involved with violence, as you'll find in most places. Don't do things you wouldn't think were unsafe to do anywhere else and you'll have a safe and fabulous time here. I'm not from the USA, but from the UK. I've lived here over 10 years. The only crime we've experienced was when a very old, unlocked, rusty bike was stolen 8 years ago. We go out at night. We drink alcoholic beverages and, at different times, visit all areas of the caye. Sadly, people enjoy reporting and reading about bad news more than good news. There is no reason for any recent events to leave you concerned unless you plan to hang out with gang members and drug dealers.

Awesome, thanks much. I travel alone quite often, common sense being my guide. Hope to chat with you more as my plans get more defined.

Most of my friends from North America travel here alone and are multiple return visitors. There's a very good reason for that. It's an amazing place.

All above is correct... however common sense is necessary.. Belize is a very poor country: leave all the diamonds and Rolex watches home. There is no question that there are thefts on the island and one needs to just use common sense. If there is a guest safe where you are staying; use it.

A little known fact... Women who are overweight tend to live longer than men who mention it...

when you go to a different country you may expect things to be different. ownership is a little different in Belize. The Maya have a communal attitude so things may be...borrowed.

Are you implying the Maya are thieves? They are among the most honest people you will ever know.
