Grand Baymen unveils office and announces new plans
On Wednesday, November 16th, shareholders of ECI Development, staff of Grand Baymen, and invited guests gathered for some socializing before the unveiling of the new Grand Baymen sales office. It was also the opportunity to announce another major development for the company. Vice President of Business Development at ECI Development (the parent company of Grand Baymen), Rachel Jensen made the anticipated announcement. “What [is happening] here is more than just cutting the ribbon. It’s opening the opportunity and door of the brand new Oceanside. This island is going through a lot of progress, and we are excited to be a part of it,” said Jensen. Chief Executive Officer of ECI Development, Michael Cobb also gave a few words. “This is an exciting day for us. I first moved to Ambergris Caye in 1994, and it’s incredible to see the changes that this island has made over the years. A lot of folks have made a huge difference on the island, and we really are excited to be a part of this going forward. I thank my entire team and ECI staff because it’s the work from them that allows Grand Baymen to be possible,” said Cobb.

Saga welcomes global humane partners to Belize; Bidding Owl returns
Over the past year, Saga Humane Society, along with representatives from Darwin Animal Doctors and Traveling Animal Doctors (TDAD), have kept in dialogue to create a partnership that would allow Saga, among other humane societies in Belize, to better address the issues of humane living. As TDAD arrived on Tuesday, November 15th, Saga shared exciting news for San Pedro Town that guarantees 24/7 animal veterinarian coverage during the week. In an effort to institute new practices, Jamison stated that Saga is looking forward to 2017, and is looking to fill in the gaps. She further explained that the past year and a half has been spent analyzing past practices, examining policies and record keeping. Jamison stated that volunteer work at Saga is at times overburdening, and has caused Saga to be sidetracked with their financial situation. “Admittedly, filings and compliance for 2015 has been delayed due to our commitment to putting only best practices forward. US IRS filing is complete as of the imposed deadline of November 15, 2016 and an audit is underway to satisfy compliance with the Belize Government regulatory bodies. The board of Directors has also been re-configured to safeguard the newly defined policies and accounting practices. We can now move forward towards what will be our best year ever,” said Jamison. Now that Saga is up to standards, they are hoping that with the help of TDAD, the stray animal population of Ambergris Caye will decrease significantly, and educational programs regarding proper animal care will be implemented.

SPTC to implement new recycling program
In order to properly address the on-going garbage crisis across Ambergris Caye, Mayor Daniel Guerrero is hoping to increase cleaning efforts by putting forth a new recycling program. Paper, glass bottles, Styrofoam, and plastic are not only unappealing, but they contribute to environmental and marine pollution, vector borne diseases, and various health hazards. According to Mayor Guerrero, San Pedro needs to ‘clean up’ their act urgently. “San Pedro is Belize’s leading tourist destination, and we are trying to maintain that. We want to implement this recycling program so that the town is clean, attractive, tropical and friendly,” said Mayor Guerrero. Although San Pedro does not have recycling bins, the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) is looking to invest in purchasing these bins to reduce trash. The idea is for residents and visitors to place their recyclable items (paper, aluminum tin, and plastic) in separate bins around public areas.

NEW BELIZE CRUISE PORT DECLARED WORLD HERITAGE SITE!
Belize’s newest eco-park, Squander Caye, was declared a site of outstanding international importance for mega cruise lines and therefore as deserving special protection for cheapskate cruise travelers at the park’s unveiling ceremony yesterday. The ceremony was full of pompous circumstance. Pompous people who cared diddly about the ecologically damaging circumstances that brought the eco-park to its inglorious existence were present to celebrate their magnificent achievement. Minister of Touristic Affairs and Seismic Testing, Manwell Ereba, announced that Squander Caye Eco-Park was constructed in line with the National Unsustainable Tourism Strategy, better known as NUTS. “The arrival of mega cruise lines to this part of our country is in line with the NUTS guidelines that speak to the state-of-the-art squandering of our precious natural and cultural resources,” Ereba stated. “The cruise line has been kind enough and working hard to give us a kick right in the NUTS to create the type of unsustainable ecotourism that is needed and is welcomed by everybody except the majority of Belizeans.”

FCD signs MOU in London for Maya 2020 Project
The environmental NGO Friends of Conservation and Development (FCD), signed a memorandum of understanding this week with a company in the United Kingdom called SELVANA Ltd., for a new conservation initiative called the Maya 2020 project. Under the MOU, FCD will be the organization to implement the project, which is geared towards preservation of the Chiquibul Forest Reserve. The project will guard against illegal foresting and poaching by combining By using a range of remotely sensed imagery techniques and ground-based acoustic technology, a global network of trained volunteer observers will monitor the forest in real-time from anywhere in the world – 24hrs a day, seven days a week. Chris Minty, MBE, managing director of Selvana, emphasized at the signing that the rainforest is important because it provides critical habitat for countless rare and endangered species, including tapir, scarlet macaw, howler monkey and the elusive jaguar.

Chief Justice reserves ruling in GOB/BNTU case
Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin has reserved judgment until Monday November 21, in the case of the Belize National Teacher’s Union (BNTU) and Adelaida Guerra v. the Attorney General of Belize and the Minister of Education. The Court held a closed session Friday evening, spanning almost two hours, where attorneys for both sides presented their arguments to the Chief Justice. The BNTU sought an injunction, barring the Ministry of Education from making salary deductions from the teachers who participated in the 11-day strike in October. The Ministry argued that it has already begun processing the salary deductions, therefore rescinding the decision will come with considerable difficulty. BNTU President Luke Palacio said that the ministry is making a deliberate effort to punish the teachers, who stood up against the government and made demands for good governance.

NASA Launches GOES-R Weather Satellite
Images from the satellite are expected to enhance weather forecasts, provide advanced warning of floods and better tracking of wildfires, plumes and volcanic ash clouds. A U.S. weather satellite that will “revolutionize” forecasting blasted off from Florida’s Cape Canaveral on Saturday, promising to deliver continuous high-definition views of hurricanes and other storms over the Western Hemisphere. A detailed stream of images provided by the satellite is expected to sharpen weather forecasts, provide more advanced warning of floods and better tracking of wildfires, plumes and volcanic ash clouds. Once in position 22,300 miles (35,888 km) above the equator, GOES-R is designed to take a complete picture of the hemisphere every five minutes while simultaneously zooming in on specific regions to monitor fires, volcanic eruptions, heavy rainfall and storms. The satellite, the 17th in the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) series, is the first to be launched since 2010. It is a step up from its predecessors, which take 30 minutes to image the hemisphere and are not capable of carrying out multiple tasks at the same time. “This is a quantum leap,” Sandra Cauffman, deputy director of Earth Sciences at NASA, said at a press conference on Thursday. “It will truly revolutionize weather forecasting.” GOES-R, developed by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, has four times better resolution and can take images five times faster than its predecessors, said NOAA program scientist Steven Goodman.

Murray community launches ‘Books for Belize’
As this is being written, Murray State University Regents Professor Emeritus Bonnie Higginson is back in a country with which she has a deep affinity – Belize. Since 2007, in fact, she and several others from the Murray area have visited this tiny Central American nation that has come to form somewhat of a pipeline between its soil on the Yucatan Peninsula and Murray. Many students from this nation that borders both Mexico and Guatemala have come to Murray to attend college, then gone back to their homeland to use what they learned at MSU.

Donald Trump to be invited to meet the Queen at Windsor
Donald Trump is to be invited to meet the Queen as the government deploys its “secret weapon” to cement close ties with the new American president. Plans to roll out the red carpet for Mr Trump with a state visit in the northern summer of 2017 are being drawn up at the highest levels in Whitehall. A formal invitation for Mr Trump to make the UK one of his first foreign stops will be issued once he is sworn in as president on January 20. Discussions between British officials and Trump’s team are expected to begin soon to ensure that a date can be agreed for June or July next year. The Queen will also send an official congratulatory message to the president to mark the inauguration. Details of the planning were revealed by two ministers and a senior official close to Downing Street. A No 10 source confirmed that Mr Trump would visit in 2017.

Starting At The Beginning: Archaeologists Use Chicxulub Crater Rocks, Prehistoric Teeth In Tracking Ancient Humans
Archaeologists are turning to the Chicxulub crater and using prehistoric teeth to track ancient humans. First, University of Florida's Ashley Sharpe made a map to determine the birthplaces of ancient animals and people in Central America. This was done using lead isotope values from rocks from the Chicxulub crater, the site where the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs hit Earth fell, as well as locations in Honduras, Guatemala and Belize. This map is important because it will be used to match lead found within prehistoric teeth. "If I find an ancient Maya individual buried on the Yucatan in Mexico, I can do a chemical analysis of the lead in their teeth and discover a very different story," said Sharpe, adding the discovery can change how archaeologists view everything. Pinpointing locations of birth and death will help archaeologists in tracking the movement of prehistoric Mayans, which can potentially help in solving the mysteries of their civilization's origin and eventual demise. Sharpe and colleagues published their work in the journal PLOS One.
