New Prices Under New Butane Regime

New butane prices were announced today - they are the first under the new pricing regime implemented a month ago. The new prices went into effect over the weekend and they fix the price for a hundred pound cylinder in Belize City at $117.00, $119.00 in Belmopan and San Ignacio, $120.00 in Benque Viejo, $118.00 in Orange Walk, $117.00 in Corozal and $121.00 in Punta Gorda.

There is no longer a variable price structure for LPG imported from Mexico, since under the new standards all imported LPG has to be a independently certified 60/40 mix between propane and butane.

Butane Prices Gets Standardized- Is It Good News For You?

Tonight there is some good news and bad news for housewives and restaurant owners. Effective 9th February 2013 both the liquid petroleum gas imported from Mexico and Central America will be sold at the same price. The bad news is that while with the new prices LPG imported from Mexico will see a reduction of one dollar, LPG imported from Central America will see an increase of $8.00 as the price for hundred pound cylinder of butane has been standardized.

The new prices are as follows- Orange Walk $118.00, Corozal and Belize City $117.00, Belmopan and San Ignacio $119.00, Benque Viejo $120.00, Dangriga $121.00 and Punta Gorda $122.00.

In the past, the Ministry of Trade, Investment Promotion, Private Sector Development and Consumer Protection conducted periodic reviews of prices based on invoice submissions by the LPG importers. Pricing was traditionally established based on commercial invoices presented by the importers, which was found to not always reflect the quality of the product, which varied by supplier and origin of the product.

In an effort to achieve stability in domestic prices and standardization of quality for LPG, the Government of Belize, through the Ministry, has implemented a new LPG Importation Protocol to be adopted by all LPG Importers and domestic producers, regardless of product origin.

With the new Importation Product, the basis for accepted declared invoice prices is now based on the Mont Belvieu index1 with a tolerance fluctuation within a fixed range and an acceptable ceiling approved by the Ministry and reviewed from time to time, to be applied to all LPG suppliers; and an established minimum standard mixture of 60:40 propane to butane.

Also mixtures on importation are to be confirmed via third party certificates as a means of ensuring that all importers inclusive of the local producer abide accordingly.

The new LPG Importation Protocol was made into effect December 1st 2012.

Butane Prices Going Up

The price of LPG gas, or what we call "butane" is going up again - this time by five dollars.

The supplies control unit today announced that Central American Gas - which is less efficient - will sell for 121 dollars per hundred pound cylinder undelivered din the city.

And Mexican butane which is more efficient, will sell for 125 dollars.

The difference? Mexican LPG has 60% propane to 40% butane while the Central American version sold by BWEL, Southern Choice Gas, Zeta and Tomza is 90 percent propane and 10% butane, which is less efficient, but cheaper.

Butane prices go up

Consumers of butane, that’s just about every household, restaurant or hotel in the country, are bracing for an additional increase in the cost of fuel. Earlier today, the Belize Bureau of Standards, through a press release, announced a spike in the controlled price of liquid petroleum gas. The increase is countrywide and varies according to the ratio of butane/propane mixture. In September, the cost per hundred pound cylinder went up to a hundred and seventeen dollars. That was a little over four months ago. At midnight tonight, it will climb to a hundred and twenty-five dollars in Belize City, a hundred and twenty-seven dollars in Belmopan and San Ignacio, a hundred and twenty-eight dollars in Benque Viejo del Carmen, a hundred and twenty-six dollars in Orange Walk, a hundred and twenty-five dollars in Corozal, and a hundred and twenty-nine dollars in Dangriga. A tank of butane is most expensive in Punta Gorda where its new price will be a hundred and thirty dollars. The said prices are for the sixty/forty mixture of butane and propane.

Price of Sub-Standard LPG Going Up

Last night we told you that government is trying to negotiate a deal where it can import LPG, or "butane" from Mexico. The idea is to stabilize the price, the quality and the supply.

But in the meantime it's business as usual for the central American importers who keep jacking up their prices even though their product is mostly propane - in a ration not approved for sales to homes and restaurants.

The new piece increase puts the LPG from Central America at 128 dollars per hundred pound cylinder - same as the price for higher grade butane imported from México.

There's good news on the LPG front tonight as the price of BUTANE is tumbling. Effective yesterday, the new controlled price for a 100 pound cylinder of Mexican LPG in Belize City is 115 dollars, down from 128 dollars - a more than 10% reduction. That is LPG sold by Belize Gas and Western Gas.

The Central American LPG sold by Belize Western Energy, Southern Choice Butane, Zeta Gas and Tomza Gas is also sharply down from 128 per hundred pound cylinder to 112 dollars.
