My passport expires in October. I read somewhere you must have a valid passport to enter Belize, WITH AT LEAST SIX MONTHS BEFORE EXPIRATION. Does anyone know how strictly this is enforced? I will be there the first of May.

BBFB-

I don't have an answer for you on the strictness of the policy, but if I were you I'd hedge my bets. You can get an expedited passport in 2 weeks for only an extra $35 (plus overnight delivery fee). That seems like a small price to pay to avoid potentially ruining (or at least complicating) your vacation in Belize!

Here is the web site for the US State Department Passport Office: http://travel.state.gov/passport_services.html There are answers there to all kinds of questions, plus you can download the renewal form.

Good luck!!

Thank you so much NJGirl. You are right, may as well just get it over with. Thanks for the tips as well as the link to the passport website. Have a great day.

Becky,

Robbie and I got our passports in the mail exactly 3 weeks to the day we applied. We went to the City Clerks office at Randolph and Washington. Since there's a passport agency in Chicago, they send the applications over daily, I think. You may want to pay for the expedited service to play it safe, though.

I'll see you in 30 days!

Sammie

Looking forward to meeting you Sammie and thanks for the info. Just made my appt to go in and have the passport taken care of. See you in May. Just ask Tim at the front desk what room I'm in and give me a ring when you get in. I'll buy you both a drink next door. Becky.

Becky: We renewed our passports (applications available to print on-line) in January and got them back exactly nine days after we mailed the application in for renewal. We live in Iowa so we are nowhere near the Philadelphia renewal office. You'd probably be way safe if you did it on the regular renewal basis but I think I'd invest the $35 for the peace of mind.

Go online, find the forms to renew, get your photo taken and send it in with a Postal tracking receipt. I got mine back in under 3 weeks.

Remeber there are several risks: Not getting on the plane, if you transfer planes, not getting on the second one (I saw that happen in Houston) and not getting out opf Belieze on your scheduled flight. I'm sure I'm excluding other bad things that could happen.

Belize consulate in the US says the 6 month thing doesn't apply to US citizens, that you just need a passport to be valid for the duration of the trip.
