It was part of the original plan
for the Belize City Tourism
Village, but is only just now
being put into place. A number
of water taxis, previously
working out of other locations
on the Haulover Creek, have
joined together to form the
Tourism Village Water Taxi Association. According
to association president-pro-tem Joe Marin, getting
to Caye Caulker and San Pedro will now be more
convenient than ever.
Joe Marin, Tourism Village Water Taxi Assoc.
"We have modern facilities here, we have very good
docking area, much better than what I have over
there. And it's a moving world, you've got to keep
moving up."
Stewart Krohn
"Up until this time, the main water taxi terminal has
been the marine terminal just up the Haulover Creek.
It there room do you believe for both that terminal
and this terminal to operate successfully?"
Joe Marin
"Yes, I do believe because I had my clients over there
and I advise everybody to come over here. We were
operating, Andrea was operating there, and we are
doing...but I think here is a much better place and we
should attract more people. The parking area over
there is good, a lot of people come by taxi and you
know the problem out there in the centre of town,
parking a taxi in the middle of the street to take off
passengers. The run is only a minute more, the taxis
can come in here, no hassle from the traffic warden
hassling them to hurry up and people are blowing.
They come in here, quite comfortable and unload their
passengers without hassle."
Tickets to Caye Caulker are fifteen dollars one way,
twenty-five dollars return, while San Pedro sells for
twenty-five dollars one way, forty-five return. The
new water taxi terminal features its own
restaurant and shops as well as offering access to
the full range of attractions in the rest of the
Tourism Village, including a newly opened
Steakhouse. Bracketing the village on the north and
south are two new restaurants, The Harbour View
and Wet Lizard, turning the entire area into an
increasingly popular entertainment centre for
Belizeans and visitors alike.
