Please tell me about the condition of the beach and water on AC. We usually travel to Playa del Carmen, Mexico every other year and another Caribbean spot on the off year (Barbuda, Aruba, Antigua, etc). PDC is quickly getting the Cancunism disease and tourism is becoming rampant. We thought of going to Belize because it reminded us of PDC 6-8 years ago. I have heard that the beaches on AC are not as nice and the sea grass is awful. Please give me your thoughts.

I've been going to Playa del Carmen for the last 3 years and had the same concerns about the water and beaches of Ambergris. Yes, there is sea grass but it's not that big of a deal. If you really want to swim in the sea, there are piers that extend past the sea grass.

The water is beautiful, maybe a little more green than PDC but just as clear.

The sand is just as white and like in PDC, it doesn't burn your feet.

Bottom line is although I like PDC and will be there next month, I would rather be going back to Ambergris. It's more laid back, the people are friendlier and you don't have all of the Mega-Resort All-Inclusive crap that PDC has and like Toad said, Ambergris Caye is not about beaches.

JT----- I agreewith you 100%-----We are also going to PDC next month..We live in Dallas& was in AC the 1st week of July..I don't like to compare the two because they are totally different....Cost-wise is a big difference ..Charter flights to Mexico are a lot cheaper & we like the all-inclusive resorts,In Mexico but wouldn't take for the food&drink experiences in AC>>>>
When are you going to PDC??

I agree with JT and Johnboy Ė itís almost like comparing apples and oranges. True, the beaches at AC are not nearly as big as PDC and there is some sea grass. Itís a short walk from the sand to the water and I assume that is because of the reef being just offshore (less wave action). The biggest difference I noticed is that you donít have to climb over hundreds of bodies to get to the water or to lay on the beach. It really depends on what you like doing while at the beach. If you enjoy lounging on a huge beach with huge crowds and being able to walk out into the water anywhere to swim, then perhaps you would prefer PDC. On the other hand, if you enjoy some peace and quiet at the beach and donít mind walking out on a pier (or up the beach a bit) to swim, then you would probably enjoy AC. You wonít find the huge expanses of white sand at AC Ė but you will find plenty of space to sunbathe (simply because there are so few people sunbathing). If you enjoy snorkeling, there are many different snorkeling trips available at very reasonable prices. You can also simply walk out on Ramonís pier for a taste of snorkeling. They have provided a nice little area to attract fish Ė you wonít find a big variety there, but it is very enjoyable Ė especially for people who arenít sure they are ready for 2-3 hours of snorkeling on one of the trips. You will have to weigh out the pros and cons. Personally, I would rather not have to fight the crowds of tourists just to lay on a beach that ONCE looked like a picture postcard.

The sea grass is everywhere. You can lay on the beach (no sand fleas) but you cant go in the water. Also, there is trash everywhere.

Instead of grass growing out of the ground, it grows from the ocean floor. It dislodges as a matter of course during the wave action, and washes up on the beach. Smells like a urinal that hasnt been flushed.
