What is the crime rate and general safety like on AC. Are the resorts monitored by security or wide open??

Crime is crime as long as you use common sense you will be fine. I have traveled to the island twice by myself and never had any problems. The security at Banana Beach is beyond explaination, no need to worry there.

I agree with jackie.

We felt safe the whole time we were there. We walked everywhere and wound up in some seedy looking places but still felt totaly safe. I'm not saying that crime doesn't exist there, it is everywhere, but we felt more safe in AC than we sometimes do at home.

Most of the resorts we visited had security guards posted after the offices were closed.

Things happen from time to time, just like anywhere.

That said, I've been there 4 times, and a bunch by myself. I've walked all over the place at all hours and have never felt concerned. I do take some normal precautions, just like I would at home.

There is security all along the beach walking south and north from town, and lighting.

I take teenage kids all the time and don't worry when they are out dancing late...

Never felt my safety threatened, have visted San Pedro by myself, other visits with Hubby and then with grandkids. Of course taking all the precautions one would anywhere.

One note, with teenagers, make them aware those friendly dudes on the street/beach, are not just friendly, they are weed salesmen with great marketing skills. "just say no"
