I've read that the ATM's on AC don't take bank cards or credit cards from the US. Is that still true?
Trying to figure out if I need to bring enough cash (or travelers checks) to last the trip or if ATM's are available so I'm asking the experts. What works best?

Also curious if AMEX is frowned on or mostly accepted.

Can't wait for my late November Turkey week trip to AC. 1st time. Thanks to all for all the information that I've already gotten just searching and reading. cool

You'll need cash and traveller's cheques. I don't think there even is an ATM in San Pedro and the couple that my buds tried in Belize City didn't accept their cards. Traveller's cheques were easily cashable most anywhere.

I can't say for sure but I don't think that AMEX is taken everywhere whereas VISA or Mastercard will get you taken care of most places.

I have been able to obtain a cash advance on my visa or my bank debit card at the bank, though one must vist the bank during regular hours and must request the transaction from a bank officer. There is a small fee for the transaction - a few dollars as I recall. I have never found ATM machines on the island.

There is an ATM machine in the court yard of the Spindrift Hotel. I have seen locals use it and get cash. It appears that it only works on the local Belize Bank cards. Better bring cash, twice as much as you think you will need and leave half your clothes home. Go soon before tooo many tourist which will demand ATM machines, Budwiser and other American things.

Looks if ya want it, ya bring it. Good to know. Better than to ASSUME! shocked Don't want anything to impede the drinking, crawling and day time fun I've read about. Thanks for the answers.
