Ditto on the Barefoot Watersports. They have nice boats and great staff! Junior, Adolpho and Brion are patient and knowledgable guides.

Thanks everyone. I have read about Ruby's in a guidebook. I guess I should have been more specific on what I want to do...I'll be coming to Belize City on the Norwegian Sun cruise ship and my friend and I plan to fly over to Ambergris Caye, getting there around 9am. Then, we want to snorkel, not dive (wish we were certified! wink ) at Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley and hope to take the 2pm flight back to B.City.

I read at cruisecritic.com's message boards that someone did this and it was the perfect day trip, and avoided the long water taxi rides that the ship's excursions use. Plus, I love those smaller planes, too.

Another question I just thought of....that same person said they reserved online with Tropicair and it said $52 USD for the round trip fare, and when he got to the airport (Belize municipal), they were charging $30 if you paid in cash and $93 if you used a credit card. Any of you heard of this? Just wondering. $30 or $52--I'll pay either, I just though it was weird....

Thanks again for your help!!!!!!!! laugh

I would use Luis Caliz for a snorkle trip, he is a great guide & knows the waters very well, He will also be sure to get you back for your flight on time. He has a new boat that is set up very nice. His number is 011 501 226 2785. Best time to reach him is after 6pm. Have a great trip.

Vicki,

You have a good plan, you will really enjoy San Pedro as a break from the ship. Flying out of the "downtown" airport (not Phillip Golson International) will be a real trip for you if you like small planes and short air strips. The return landing is even more "fun". The cost is less for a round trip ticket from the downtown airport due to no landing fees to be paid by the shuttle plane. Use either Tropic or Maya, very friendly competitors. On previous trips I have arrived on one carrier and had the other deliver my bags a few minutes earlier or later because the other line was full. One last thought, here is the name and number of someone I have used on several snorkeling trips out of San Pedro. He is good and knows the reef and is very considerate of the ecology. Uses small boat, takes small number of people and his deck hand escorts you on the reef. He does not do scuba specializes in snorkeling. Everyone knows him, (with a name like this who woulldn't) ask for MERCEDES VALDEZ with the REEF SEEKER GLASS BOTTOM BOAT. # 2 Seagull Street, San Pedro Town,
Belize. phone 501-26-2539 or cell 0147316. Email rosigame@ecite.com. Whatever get to Belize soon and enjoy.

Friends just returned from a Cruise out of Galveston, Tx. While in port at Belize City, they took the ship's prearranged tour boat, to Ambergris, with 2 1/2 hours in San Pedro, for touring and lunch at a prearranged resort. This tour also included snorkeling at Shark Ray Alley. They loved it, no worries about scheduling and returning to their ship on TIME.

The "report" on a different charge for cash and credit cards at Municipal Airport is nonsense. The Maya Island and Tropic Air agents there are honest and professional. I almost always put my tickets there on my Master Card and the price is the same as paying cash. Possibly the difference was that one person was quoting Belize dollars and the other U.S. dollars, and that the people telling the story had their figures slightly off.

As to which snorkeling tour is best, keep in mind that a lot depends on the individual guide going out that particular trip. Even with the same tour operator, one day it's Ramon, the next afternoon Gordo or Cholo. The individual person doing the snorkel trip, and whether that person is in a good mood, hung over, or whatever, most of the time makes far more difference than what shop you choose. Most are fine, but you pays your money, you takes your chances.

So Lan, what exactly are you trying to say?? That there are no reputible tour guides on the island? I doubt that.

Anyway, the person that told me about the difference in price is a reputable travel agent so I doubt he was lying. Anyway, they used Hustler tours and Victor was their guide so I contacted them via email and am waiting for a response.

Thanks to everyone for giving your advice. I appreciate it..
