My countdown is now in the small numbers -- just 18 more days...

We are sailing from San Pedro, and I plan to do my own provisioning in town. I would like to supplement store-bought food with fresh seafood while we are "out at sea." Are there places out on the cayes or the reef where we are likely to come upon fishermen selling their day's catch? Mostly interested in fish and crayfish, and CLEANED conch if at all possible (but will catch my own conch and attempt to clean them if I can't buy any). Any thoughts welcome.

Fair winds,
Sailor Girl

There's a small seafood co-op at the north end of the "business district" towards the lagoon side. Street name escapes me. It might worth a try. We've always eaten for a week or more on two afternoons of fishing with a guide. Usually have to leave some behind for others. Availability of fish in some of the local restaurants has been a problem from time to time. It is much more profitable to take the gringos fishing than it is to fish commercially.

Recommend you also check at the docks back of town behind the old football field where fishermen clean their catch; just ask around who might be bringing in fish and what time of day. Visit the Thunderbolt Ferry dock there also; the owner has fish camps on the island. Happy trip!

We have always been able to purchase fresh fish or lobster in season from fishermen that we have come upon while sailing. Look for a mid sized working sailboat with several guys on it (I don't know how they all live on a boat that size) or a single man in a dugout canoe. They have always cleaned whatever we purchase at no extra charge. The fishermen are usually found near the reef fishing during the day or at some anchorages in the evening. They will not approach you to sell their catch. I usually plan for a couple fish meals during the week but always have spaghetti or something that will keep as a backup incase we don't come across any fishermen.

Don't they provide fishing equipment on those boats? If so, just stick them in the water. Izzy caught fish constantly while sailing from San Pedro to the Rio Dulce.....The guys speared fish along the reef too.....nothing like 30 minutes old fish.....
