Is it possible or recommended to go over to the mainland by ferry, rent a car, and go to some of the sights on our own, such as the Mayan ruins, etc. We usually prefer going around on our own rather than with guided tours, but will do whatever is the most practical. Have any of you done this?

Sure, no reason you can't do that. There's a Crystal Auto rental location at the Tourist Village, not far from where you'll come in to the Marine Terminal by water taxi, and there are a number of other rental companies in Belize City -- Budget, Hertz, Thrifty, etc.

Many sites, such as the Belize Zoo, all the Maya ruins, Baboon Sanctuary and others you can do on your own. A few, such as some of the caving trips, do require a guide.

Just a reminder on the Car rentals...not quite the same as in the US even though the car companies are the same name.. Insurance can be expensive and every tiny scratch is counted!! If you are lucky you won't get any. Go to the car rental page of the company you want to use then look at the specific differences before making a decision.

Well yes anything is possible.

It will cost you alot more to do things on your own. Walking the Mayan sites is easy enough but having someone who can explain things is an asset. Also getting around in a single day and then back to San Pedro will be very difficult for someone who has never been to Belize. Keep in mind that Tue. Web. And Thurs. are Cruise Ship days and the Mainland is very busy during those times. If you are going to spend several days on the mainland then by all means but, for day trips you will never get to see much but the Zoo.
