I am currently looking at buying property in Belize or Panama. I know that the property in Panama is a lot cheaper than in A.C. It is also, obvious that you all love A.C., which is EXTREMELY comfortaining! I am only 34 years old and do not plan on retiring for a long time. I haven't even started a family yet. However, my dream has always been to retire on an island as soon as is realistic. The way I look at it is, I don't know if I will ever be able to sell the land for a fortune, OR get my dream and retire on it. That being said, I really could never imagine me losing the value of the land that I purchase. Can anyone sell me on why I should buy in A.C? Of course, I am not assuming that you want me......I would just love to here what you have to say! Thanks! I would also love to add that I love this board and religiously check what you all have to say! I own a business in the States and I relentlously promote it! You are very lucky to have so many people that do that for you!

From a legal and investment angle, be sure to buy in a country with English Common Law.

We own property both in Belize and in Panama. I will be happy to discuss this choice with you if you want to email me privately at the email address on my home page (www.ambergriscaye.com/paradisevillas/index.html)
Both countries have their strong points and weak points, and it really depends on what factors are most important to you and what your goals are.
I will say that I disagree with Diane. Property rights are protected in countries other than those using "English common law," including Panama, but the rules and procedures for protecting it and the legal requirements are different.
I can also say that if speculating and "making a fortune" in a few years is your main goal, forget both Belize and Panama, and keep your money in the US.

Panamanian law is basically civil law. Common law and civil law both have their pros and cons depending upon how they are applied and the country's consitution and UCC, etc., but being comfortable with knowing the basics regarding property rights, laws, etc. is key anywhere you buy, including the good ol' USA.
