From a recent visitor to the island:
===================
As for the credit card hit, I am probably SOL. They quoted me 1% hit before the trip and the bill came thru with a 3.9% hit. 1% for Visa, 2% for Citibank and .9% who knows.
============================
These charges were made by the credit card company and banks not the Belize establishments that took the card.

And here is a link with information towards a lawsuit.....

Possible refund for Visa/Mastercard users

POSTED: Wednesday, April 09, 2003 6:11:36 PM

SAN FRANCISCO -- A judge ordered credit card giants Visa and MasterCard to refund an estimated $800 million to U.S. customers who were charged a hidden 1 percent surcharge on foreign purchases.

thanx marty....just got done booking my room, and noticed there was an additional $3.60 tacked on....the hotel told me it wasn't from them, and the bank didn't seem to know what it was for either....i mean, it's not a bunch of money, so, i didn't really worry about it....too much....something to look into tho....if they keep hitting everyone for $3 to $4 bucks a piece...it starts to add up....hmmmmmm?????

This credit card hit must be new. I've used my Master C. all over Europe and never got anything but a fair (usually best) currency exchange, no interest, and no extras. ??

I found the best thing to do is use your Visa/Mastercard that is your bank debit card. They give you current exchange rate and no added charge for currency change. Easiest and cheapest way to go. If you need cash you can use it also.
Found this out too late after a lot of charges in Europe. Used my Visa ATM last time in Belize and saved me a bunch.

thats' also the easiest way to have your account drained (ATM) and you generally have no recourse to challenge charges if you use it.

Part of the problem could be the fixed exchange rate: All over the world banks make money on the exchange rate; there is a buy and sell rate. In Belize we have a fixed rate of 2BZ$ to 1US$. Banks (and credit card companies) don't understand that (it is not in their vocabulary), and that's why they can give services for free (don't charge handling fee's on money exchange). In Europe they had the same problem about a year before the release of the Euro, when the rates of the old currencies became fixed rates.

There are SOME variations in Exchange rates in AC.
True the "normal" exchange is 2bz to 1us, but you can get rates that vary as well. Example: I got 2.04bz to 1us from the exchange shop across from Fidos. Not a big difference, but if you a changing a large sum as we were, it does add up to a little extra cash in your pocket.
