they are much more reliable do not run out of gas(sorry about the pun)-more comfortable, cheaper to run, almost as cheap to buy, cheaper maintainance-need I say more.

I rented a gas powered cart today.

The first one was tooo loud and handled bad, i took it back anf got one that is a little quiter.

It is like driving around on a lawnmower.

It is loud. It does not respond well to the gas (either nothing happens or it jumps)

But I dont know how the electric one handle.

Most carts electric or gas lurch/jumps somewhat.

One jumped thru my garage door twice and the back wall once.

Don't know why your post made me break out in loud laughter.....it even woke up the dog!
Hope I'm not getting a perverse sense of humor in my old age!

LOL.......it was a funny (but scary) story posted on this board somewhere.

PEDRO, I was not driving that electric cart. Driver was my husband........hahaha. He put a note on the crumbled door, My wife did not do this, I did.

Jerce....those 3 jumps were all within 1 minute, not separate times.

Immissing, you need an electric Jag,.. just kidding.

An awful lot of noise will be added to the environment on Ambergris Caye because of these gas-powered carts. I am trying to imagine 15 to 20 lawn mowers passing any point on Coconut Drive every hour of the day and evening. What a din.

It seems that some genius has given permission to pollute Ambergris with noise and even more exhaust fumes, and that's only the tip of the iceberg.

Next, we could have motor scooters, motorcycles, and why not mini mokes to rent too? I think in the long run it will be very detrimental to Ambergris, and especially San Pedro.

That's only one opinion, however. I'm sure there are several other views.

 debating the merits of electric over gas golf carts on San Pedro while there are hoards of dump trucks, taxis, tractors and old outboard engines is like saying we have a serious problem with crime, so lets crack down on the jay walkers.

Golf carts, gas or electric, are not the problem. Both have minor drawbacks. VERY minor when put in the overall perspective. Electric have the battery disposal problem. Gas have the noise problem only when the mufflers are not replace and the modern 4 cycle engines pollute far less than most of the current engines being used here both on the water and on the streets.

The people of Ambergris Caye have decided they want all these people here and moving them around in golf carts, gas or electric, beats the hell out of the alternatives.

If you really want to do something that will have a real effect on pollution, short of limiting the number of people on the island and the development that goes with tourism, you could start by eliminating the older polluting engines, both outboards and motor vehicles, and requiring current vehicles to be maintained properly. Of course, that is probably too radical and sensible of an approach. laugh
