Marla, you will just love Ambergris Caye. Where did you decide to stay?

Gela ~
I really want to stay at Banana Beach, trying to put more money per payday in my vacation fund. But if it doesn't work out, will probably stay at Coconuts. All I really know is that I want to be within walking distance of town, and I want an oceanfront room. I realize I won't spend a lot of time in the room, but enjoy having my morning coffee looking out over the water. I'm also known to get up in the middle of the night and sit and gaze out over the water. We have a lakefront home and not having the view is just not appealing to me. Guess I'm a little spoiled, but it's my hubby's fault! lol If you have any other suggestions I'm still open, haven't booked anything yet. eek
Thanks

Could have sworn that I heard Coral Bay Villas.

While Banana Beach is a great place to stay I really don't consider it an easy walk to town. You would probably want a golf cart if you decide to stay there.

Choo Choo & Chloe ~
I did consider Coral Bay Villas. But I have another question before looking at them closer. Does the water ever get so rough that you can't swim? I know that at times it's too rough to go out in the boat to go diving. My husband and I are both real water lovers, and would hate not being able to go swimming, therefore we were looking for a place w/pool. I just found this board about a month ago when we decided on our 2004 vacation destination ~ Ambergris Caye! I need sooooo much info and can use all the help I can get ~ I've bought a book by Lan Sluder, and have been searching tons of web sites for as much info as I can find. I would be at more of a loss without this board!
Thanks once again

Marla,

Swimming off the actual beach in SP is a little dicey since the reef stalls a lot of the natural action that would limit the seagrass growth. Some of the resorts work at removing the seagrass with varying degrees of success. At Coral Bay, and similar places, the swimming is done off the piers or docks. The property next to Coral Bay, Caribbean Villas, has a 300' dock with a protected swimming area off the end. As long as one does not make CV's dock a "home" you can swim as much as you like. There's virtually no "rough" water inside the reef and towards San Pedro town.

I'm a Michigander myself, although "ex-pat", and I'll see if I can get an e-mail addy forwarded to you so we can discuss your trip in more detail if you'd like.

I'd love it if you could e-mail me directly so that we could discuss my upcoming trip more!
Let me know if there is a way that I can help you do this.

Yes, Caribbean Villas does have a great dock and swimming/snorkeling area at the end. They have reasonably priced rooms also and you could then camp out on their pier all you want. All their rooms and suites are oceanfront/beachfront; if you book there ask for an upstairs room. Ask what their discount would be from web posted prices by booking directly with them. You would then also have the 3 acres of gardens and bird sanctuary, hammocks, hot tubs, beach and great staff. They are a 12-15 minute beach walk to town. They don't accept commissions from guides or tour companies so in some cases you get cheaper prices. You'll love the island no matter where you stay - all the choices you have mentioned are good in our humble opinion.
