JeanH:
Anything you already booked on a credit card there can be refunded in full with 48 hr cancelation ahead, you have plenty of time and can change to a hotel that does not do this, many don't. KE

ke: I must give you the same advice I gave Pedro. Do not assume that it is the hotel's doing. Most of this is the credit card company's doing. It is not fair to blame the hotel. Get the facts first.

OK: I hope you all appreciate what I just went thru. I have been on the phone for over one hour talking to 9 different people to finally get this info. My credit card -master card- issued thru Household Bank, explained to me that when I charge in Belize they convert to US dollars on a rate to 1.97BZ to 1US. Master Card charges a 1% additional fee for foreign transactions and Household Bank charges a 2% fee. What that all adds up to is if I have a $100BZ charge, I pay $52.26US or a total of 4.56% in fees. That is why I use cash, travelers checks or my Belize credit card that I pay in Belize dollars.
There are some merchants in Belize that will try and add on the service fee the Belize banks charge them for credit card use, but most absorb that and the additional fees paid by us gringos is charged by our credit card companies. So please don't blame the Belize merchants for what is not their doings.

Windsor3: by my calculation, if I were to charge a $1330US amount with a Belize merchant, I would pay according to what my credit card company charges I would pay $1390. 1330USx2=2660BZ divided by 1.97=1350x3%=1390.
Good night all!

my credit card did it to! $66.15 too much! I emailed the resort the other day about it and she said yes, it is the credit card co. so I guess I'll call the credit card co. tomorrow and complain to them and I wont get anywhere either! oh well, its weird though, this is the first time it has ever happened, and we have been all over the place.

Ya know I don't understand this post, this has been brought up a few times, even the CC folks/or attorneys against have notified us and others. It's real, some do it! Fight it or pay...but you will pay. I, imho... don't feel it's a big problem. You just deal with it when out of country. BUT... then again I'm not sure if your talkin CC or resort charges now. hehe

FYI I checked with another credit card that I have and they have a different policy. I will start a new topic under General Chat as this does not really apply to this post for you that might be interested. Thanks,By
