INCREASE IN LOBSTER PRODUCTION
It earns millions of dollars on the international market for Belize each
year, now Northern Fishermen Cooperative Society Limited says its
lobster production increased by 26 percent, or a little over 289,000
pounds. Export prices also increased by 11.67 percent or $32.00 a
pound. However, conch production decreased by 26 percent, while prices
remained the same. Shrimp production increased by more than 126,000
pounds, or 18.8 percent, showing increases for the third consecutive
year. These figures were shared during Northern Fishermen's AGM in Caye
Caulker. During the meeting, the Cooperative was also presented with
$3,000.00 from the Darden Foundation, a parent company of Red Lobster.
Both the Red Lobster and the Northern Fishermen Association are working
together in the implementation of a Lobster Aquaculture Stock and
Habitat Enhancement Project. To date, total assets of the Northern
Fishermen Cooperative Society Limited amounts to more than three million
dollars.
