Hi My husband and I are considering our first visit to Ambergris Caye late October and I was wondering about the beaches...they look great but are they swimmable (I've been told alot of turtle grass and boat traffic). Someone mentioned if I want good swimming beaches to go to Placencia. My husband recently became a big Jerry Jeff Walker fan and wants to experience some of his songs lyrics...I'd appreciate any info.. Brick

Brick We stayed at the Victoria House and the swimming was fine at the beach...some grass but not alot. Able to snorkel around the pier, but did stay at the pool quite a bit.

I found nothing wrong with the swimming off the beach. The grass sometimes freaks people out, if that's the case then just enter the water from one of the various piers. (don't be a'scared) Boat traffic does get a little busy at times, We stayed at 7 Seas Resort and swam off their pier and the boat traffic was minimal. We even snorkled to Wet Willy's and it wasn't that bad.
One Barrel and Sprite.....It doesn't get any better than that!

Ramon's keep their beach cleaned up and it is in town.
Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain.

There is sea grass (turtle grass) everywhere on AC and in Placencia because of the reef and there is no real “surf“ to mention. (with the exception of a small area at Mar de tumbo on AC) We always swim off the dock at the resort we stay at, although we stay South where there is almost no boat traffic anywhere close. (just folks coming to the resort to pick others up) Jerry Jeff has a home on AC as well, you can rent it out too for a price.

we swim off the beach at Carib Villas, Ramons, Banana Beach, Tropica, Banyan Bay, Victoria House, and many other spots.
many resorts clean up an area along the waterfront for swimming ...

Several of the piers have decent snorkling. Hustlers and Amigo's have "artifical reefing" and offers a view of nice sea life. Mask, snorkle and fins are needed.
Gone fishing!!

I am a HUGE Jerry Jeff Walker fan! I didn't know he has a house on AC ! Wow! I prefer the beaches on Placencia myself. It has more of a Carribean, laid back feel. More mellow. AC is okay, but there are always boats zipping around and a lot of hub-bub. There is turtle grass in most locations in Belize, ie, the water is not "prisitine" like in some other locales. But I love it anyway. Miss it.
