email through btl remains hideous today. delayed mail, people not being able to send, lost stuff....

hang in there, it usually clears in a few days...
feel free to re-message someone if you haven't heard from them. you never know which message might slip thru

We thought numerous times that we were being ignored and had some friends trying to make reservations who almost gave up - before we realized there is a problem in paradise. Must be hard on businesses.

AOL is not so hot either these days - it is spontaneously blocking whole domains for unpredictable/unknown periods of time. If you are amongst the blocked, you do not get a bounce-back message. Your e-mail simply does not arrive.

If you get online with BTL you can still send and receive on Yahoo, Hotmail, etc. Many locals use BTL for Internet access and have Hotmail or Yahoo accounts for correspondence.

Diane, you are 100% correct.

PLUS: I have been urging my regular computer clients who have splurged on 24/7 high speed connections to SERIOUSLY consider dumping their @btl.net email address, especially hotel owners who are losing BUNCHES of business because of emails not received or sent.

I've been telling them to go with a paid Yahoo! account...the "paid" part is about 30US a year for some serious storage space.

It is abundantly clear to me (even after a few glasses of wine) that BTL is not getting the job done when it comes to virus / worm control on their servers. This last week has gone down as the worst in virus infection history (Blaster, SobigF and Welchia(sp?). Most relatively savvy computer users have been able to keep their systems free and clear of these latest viruses but BTL seems to be incapable of responding to these threats before they have caused their clients major damage in lost business.

This is very good wine I am drinking.

One more thing: Diane: Island Internet is not for sale any more!

There is another you can access from any computer in the world. Go for the paid version of Bigfoot.com about $30 for a year with very high storage. I have never had a problem with www.bigfoot.com in over 7 years of use. Check it out and forget BTL and its amateurish business approach.

We have gone DirecWay and only have BTL as backup if needed (but never have yet). No longer use the BTL address and are fazing it out. All e-mails get answered by our corozalbayinn.com address even if you write to the old BTL address. If you have a web site it usually gives you several e-mail addresses with your domain name.
eg. you@your-hotels-name.com. It sounds and is more professional.
Internet in Corozal Town is in good shape.
In Corozal Town we have 2 wireless internet providers. One originates out of Chetumal, Mexico and the other out of the Duty Free Zone. Anyone who is into computers and high speed Internet has it. And a few of us splurge on DirecWay. cool

Ken in San Pedro (226-2310; 601-6146) sells Starband satellite internet; many hotels and businesses now use it in San Pedro. Priced previously at approximately $2,000US for complete set of dish/components and installation with $50-65-ish per month Starband fee; all prices US dollars. Ken can provide most recent prices.

Thanks for the high speed info. Outside my budget. These high tech things always get cheaper so maybe next year.
