Austinites Organize Belize Relief

News is beginning to come out of the Central American country of Belize blasted by Hurricane Keith earlier this week. Belize is a popular vacation destination for many Austinites, and some of them are putting together a relief effort, and they're asking for your help.

Jerry Jeff Walker, the godfather of the Austin music mystique, starting visiting Belize about 10 years ago. Like many Austinites, he fell in love with the place, building a house and even recording an album there. He was on the road when he got the news about Hurricane Keith.

"She says, 'Well, the storm is sitting right over Ambergris Caye,'"songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker said.
Like so many others, Jerry Jeff waited anxiously for news. "When the storm was boiling around this way it sort of really
ripped, of course, where the locals lived," Walker said.

News is trickling out now, and it seems that most everyone on Ambergris Caye has come through. Jerry Jeff's house there is
ruined, but still standing. It's the people he's worried about.

"The weather's so nice year-round. You can have a fairly primitive house and live very comfortably, but in a case like this, that's the first thing to get ripped up and blown away," Walker said.

So Jerry Jeff wants Austin to help out the people in Belize. While he helps mobilize an immediate relief effort, he's asking us to make a donation to the Red Cross.

"You could do a 100 bucks and probably change somebody's life," Walker said, "But they're pretty strong folks -- survivors."

While the needs in Belize are many, the best way for you to help is with a cash donation to the Red Cross, call 1-800-HELP NOW or
you can make an online donation at the Red Cross's Web site.
