Folks -- been rushing the preparation of El Boate.

I have a lot of visits from village people here wondering when they will
start giving out jobs in the Cayes for reconstruction. Well, so happens the
fleet of skiffs had just got back in -- about 300 yards from I work on my
boat.

Said -- well -- lets go find out.

Seems they need no Belizeans yet. But lots of workers over there already.

Really -- I wonder where they are getting them from??

I smell another Free Zone here. That is no Belizeans welcome --

Never did get any one interested in my Boat Tzabcan running supplies. And
Tony Hores large sail boat -- which normally is making runs of vegetables
-- is sitting idle as well. As is Powo's. He to normally runs vegetables to
San Pedro.

We certainly have more than enough vegetables in Corozal to "move".

Guess as long as this big foreign donation deal is going down -- Belizeans
get to sit on the side-lines -- out of work!

Right on all you "Gringoes" -- and Belizean Pseudo Gringoes -- ignore the
rest of Belize and its problems. How many children are going to sleep
tonight on main land Belize with no bed -- never mind house??

They do not need your charity -- they need their fathers to have work!!

What is with that crowd over there?? I guess they figure all Belizeans are
crack heads and thieves. They never have seen a village person in their
lives -- even though they live in what they think is Belize. These people
here in Northern Belize are not crack headed thieves!! They work hard and
well and can be trusted not to rob you!! and I have seen families such is
this all over Belize. Why black ball the Belizean people just from
acquaintance of the few of the worst that reach the Cayes?

I see an extremely ugly situation developing here. If Belizeans must starve
-- they certainly do not need to smell high living wafting to them from
"their" Cayes. They can starve in the same manner after they have "chased"
those people out of here.

Many are forgetting the basic rules of moving to another country. Pay
respect to the original peoples. This is not the era of the Conquistador
mentality.

We all know Northerners that establish themselves here for any period of
time develop poor attitudes about Belizeans. Fine -- but understand -- if
this country suffers -- you all will be the first to regret it. Mark well
my words.

You were not allowed to come to Belize just to enrich the GOP -- not mater
how that organization tries to paint it that way. Your here to help "spur"
the economy of Belize. Not just enrich the ministers of GOB and the tax
coffers of government.

Hard as it is may be for many of these "new" arrivals to understand -- they
are obligated to contribute to local economy -- not freeze local people out
of their new deal.

The rule right now is no Belizean can go to the Cayes unless they carry
there own provisions. Fine -- between Tony's, Powo's and my boats we can be
there tomorrow with 20 "carpenters" and all their provisions plus
tarpaulins and posts to set up "camp". when I suggested this to the NEMO
man just 90 minutes ago -- he almost had a heart attack!! No Mr Peter -- do
not even suggest that -- it will make big trouble.

Those "Carpenters" were quietly listening right behind me. Even for simple
village people -- the message was quite clear.

San Pedro and Caye Caulker are operated by people that are very "cold".

Better we chase them all -- get our fishing rights back -- at least we will
no longer have to worry about feeding ourselves.

Trouble is brewing in paradise. My boat is going Conch fishing -- to hell
with the Cayes!! They don't need us -- don't want us -- they have British
service men doing it all for them for nothing. Fine --

Peter Singfield

dear peter,

I am so glad you put htis on the board.

I have been running ads on the radio for the last 3 days looking for workers. I need 20-30 people.

we had 5 people show up

today i think we only had three

we leave right next to the thunderboat dock at 7am everyday

ask for the Cayo Espanto boat

the name if the boat is Barbara Lynn....it is green with a green awning

we need hard workers for some demolition and also skilled carpenters

tell all of your construction workers to go see armando graniel (tony knows him)

we all know how rumors spread in belize....I heard that my island was being looted by 4 different people immediately upon arrival... well, one of my workers took one TV that he bought 2 weeks ago home with him on tuesday to orange walk. He was going to check on his family. rumors are running rampant now

workers are need deperately and they are appreciated. I witnessed the appreciation personally.

do not let a few "bad apples" in San Pedro corazol or elsewhere spoil belizean pride.

what is the pay rate now for laborers in san pedro and in corazol. I want to be fair.

please tell the hard workers and ones with dock building experience to find my boat at 7am at the exact spot that tony sells veggies

i need to move sand, lumber, pull nails, clean and rebuild

thanks

No email that I can see for him. If anyone has Peter's email, it would be wonderful for them to email him a copy of this response. Afterall,we wouldn't want him out there having fun on his boat, conch fishing... when he could be working. [Linked Image] [Linked Image]
This is just so wonderful!

I am glad that Peter was able to get his message across: That there are people ready to go right to work rebuilding and that Belizean construction workers should be hired to do this. And I am glad that Jeff got the info and will get these people working. Hopefully, others who need to hire will also.
BUT: I do not understand the personal attack on those of us who are trying to raise (and personally contributing) funds to relief and reconstruction needs and his claims that these efforts are some kind of conspiracy to "take over" and should be stopped. Perhaps I am naive, but, with the exception of one insurance man who was trying to hustle independent adjusting work (and got his head handed to him immediately by 4 or 5 people who responded to sales pitch) I have seen no evidence of anyone trying to take jobs away from Belizeans. How is fund raising for supplies taking anyone's job away?
Peter's attack on all "northerners" for our fund raising efforts seems unjustified and paranoid to me.
As someone who is looking in from the outside, my impression is that the free labor being provided by the military units here is immediate and needed and will not take jobs away from Belizeans. My impression is that the people who live on Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker welcome this immediate help. If this is wrong, I would want to hear about it from people who live on Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker (rather than from Peter, who does not and who has apparently not suffered a loss that these visiting troops are needed to address.)
There are a lot of things that should be done to ensure that micro-economies are preserved. For example, in a previous post, I expressed concern that the women who run the wonderful home cooked food vending operations on Barrier Reef Drive be contacted to see if they need help in getting their equipment and supplies replaced immediately so that they can continue to run their businesses and provided needed food for the community.
I don't know if there is a local community credit union operating, but if there is, we should find a way to fund it quickly, and if there isn't, money should be raised to help the local community start one and put it right to work making immediate funds available for local people to rebuild their homes, for local boatmen who lost their boats to replace them, and things like that.
Also, there may be things that the government of Belize needs to re-think (continuing to charge duty on reconstruction and refurbishing supplies is certainly one of them) but I think that constructive suggestions on such things can be made without personally attacking the many people who have offered their help on this message board.)
Just my two cents (well, maybe a dollar...)
