Read a funny story, the incoming troops brought 1000 blankets as relief
supplies. BLANKETS? A light cotton sheet maybe, some mosquito netting
is good, but BLANKETS?

Oct 7th, 2000. Hurricane Keith Emergency Bulletin Board 7:30 p.m. EST,
Saturday.

EMERGENCY IS OVER! CLOSING UP SHOP!

Marty

Time to pull the plug! The Emergency is over! If you want to go to a
passive relaxed part time mode and clean up loose ends. Do so, over the
next few days! Contact the Honourable Patty Arceo, Area Representative
and see she knows she has $30,000 + USA, to divide equally between San
Pedro Town Board Emergency Committee and the Caye Caulker Village Council
Emergency Committee. Tell her customs is no longer honoring relief
supplies coming through her name. Getting to be too many chiefs and not
enough indians.
The place is swarming with British troops, USA efforts and other
International agencies now. We are quickly becoming a political
embarrassment as we are uncontrolled outside independents, as relief
supplies go. Been through it before, old story. Let the newbies do the
grandstanding.
The bureaucrats, politicians and incoming relief agencies and military
are now vying for turf and territory in the relief and governing war. We
are in the way and going to get trampled. We've done our job, time to
close up shop.
I'd like to see the Bulletin Board closed up, soon as the loose ends
are tied up and then mounted for the historical archives on the Belize
Electronic Resource and Development Library.
There is a time to call it quits. The emergency is over, we have done our job and it was a good one!
I peg our costs for the Emergency operation at about $7300 USA. We are
going to have to swallow that, as we are a Belize NGO ( non-profit) and
cannot accept payment in the USA. Nor do we have a bank account at the
bank on Caye Caulker. We could open one I suppose, but don't know
anybody willing to pay our operating costs. If I can raise funds through
GRANTS to offset the telephone bills and the web space and bandwidth
costs, will let you know. I'll give it a whirl. Our mailing address if
anybody asks in the USA is the Belize Development Trust, c/o 2471 NW 152
Terr., Opa Locka, Fl., USA.

Find out what our replacement is,? Called SUMA and we can notify
people of that as our last closing ACT.

Marty,

I certainly cannot express myself as articulately as the author of the beautiful poem which was written in your honor, but I can give you my most sincere appreciation.

From the bottom of my heart I shall always remember and appreciate your expertise and ever vigilent companionship throughout Keith's rampage.

I know I am not alone in my admiration for your talent and integrity.

Thanks again....

Marty,
You mention "Closing up Shop" and with Ray Auxillio,s message regarding funds for the message board and hurricane relief information, etc. does this mean that this board will shut down an we will never be able to read it again?

I've been trying to copy so many items from it, just for personal archives and also to share with my brother who is still on Caye Caulker as we speak. I wanted to save some of this so that I could share it with him once he is back home to visit. I think it would be wonderful for the people of CC and AC, who have not been able to see this, how much care and positive action took place on their behalf.

I understand the financial impact this must have had and many of us are willing to donate to that purpose. Please let us know if and when this board will be shut down and is there anyway that the thoughts and words spoken here will be preserved?

Thanks, Judy of California
Ps: I know that we're all going to feel a great loss without it and without you! Again, my sincere thanks! Bless You!

I'll still be here answering and posting, just like always on the regular board...

Also, I really want folks who were there to be able to read what their friends said.

Its nice to be loved.

Marty...do you still feel that updating the missing and found lists are necessary? I am in the process of doing that now..then John in Vancouver forwarded this message on.

First time I've ever been happy to read that a shop is closing up..due to lack of business. So glad it's all over..for the most part!!

Marty - I work with one of the world's largest accounting firms (BDO SEIDMAN, LLP). I will find out tomorrow how you can raise funds for reimbursing your costs. There are many many ways we could help you recoup your costs AND keep you out of trouble with the IRS - that's our specialty!

Please respond to me at my email: [email protected] and let me know how your company non-profit is organized and in what country, etc. Adios, and thanks again for everything.
