Francis, Keeper of the Carts at Ramons
What makes San Pedro unique, in part, is its golf carts, a prime means of transportation in and around the mostly sandy roads of this home to about 8,000 San Pedranos.
Ramonís Village, a fixture in San Pedro, may have the best fleet of golf carts available of any resort on the island. All a bright Caribbean hot pink color, thereís no questioning that theyíre the most distinctive golf carts on the island.
Overseeing Ramonís rental fleet of golf carts (and bicycles) is Francisco Aldana ó known by most simply as Francis. He has worked in Ramonís golf cart and bike rental center for 11 years, the last nine as manager. For this easy going people person, being ďkeeper of the cartsĒis just plain fun.
ďWhen I first started at Ramonís, there were two openings, one in the office and out here (in the golf cart rental center). I didnít want to be cooped up in an office. Iíd rather be out here joking around with people,Ē Francis says.
There are 17 golf carts under his keep; 10 for rent to guests of Ramonís, and seven for staff to use for airport transfers and pickups. He estimates that most guests who rent a cart do so for an average of about four hours. The carts run by an electric charge. ďIf you would drive one non-stop, I suppose the charge would last about eight hours. But it can usually go about two days with normal start and stop use.Ē
Francisí jovial personality fits his job well: with the golf cart center located at the entrance of Ramonís, he wants to leave a good impression. ďAfter they get off the plane, I might be the first person they meet on the island, and peopleís first impression of Ramonís and people on the island. And I love it. I love all the different accents from around the world, and the people you meet. They remember you, and theyíll even stay in touch.Ē
