The boats are referred to as a Mexican panga, Mexican launchon, or Mexican skiffs. Most popular sizes are 23' and 25'. Although similar hull designs are made by Belize, Honduras, and Guatemala, the shape is considered Mexican. I have been told the actual design came from China many years ago, but have no specific proof of that statement. It is also rumored that the design came into existence during the construction of the Panama Canal.
Regardless, it is by far the best overall performing boat for its price. The narrow beam and extended length allows heavy loads to be carried with minimal engine size. At slower speeds it is somewhat of a wet boat, allowing the driver to be sprayed with the prevailing wind. The shallow draft also is very practical for Belize.
The bow height and transom layering is a good indicator of origin. The higher bows are used more in Southern Belize and in the Bay of Honduras where the reef is further from shore and the waves tend to be bigger. These are the ones usually built in Honduras and Guatemala. Once the captain gets used to handling a bow that can swing when it catches the wind, and the wide turning radius, it is very easy to handle. They are extremely strong and light, and survived the hurricanes much better than other designs.
If anyone has more history to the boat, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Just wondering if anyone can advise the price range of a panga or skiff made in either Belize or Mexico - just the finished boat costs. We realize the other expenses of transferring to final destination is another cost to consider but mostly interested in how much to anticipate for the boat - approximately 18ft. We will want to acquire one whenever we manage to get moved there, but now just working on general budgeting of necessaties! TIA
