Is Belize still a safe destination or should we be worried to take our family, young kids, in Feb?

Are we talking about protest and strikes that will go on 24/7 or are we taking about Costa Rican style strikes that occur just during business hours?

Oh God, here we go again. Juli, keep an eye on the situation, but I would feel safer there than here it seems.
Been there, done that, the washing machine ate the T-shirt

"The government is running a large budget deficit and is spending much more than it takes in. It has a huge trade deficit. Cronies and insiders have been rewarded with big contracts and sweetheart deals. Small entrepreneurs and conservation interests have been dissed. The big stake holders -- Carnival Cruise Lines and political insiders -- have been rewarded with new, financially lucrative deals. The currency has been under stress. Financial experts have been called in."
I'm not sure what part of this paragraph that preceded the comparisson to the situatin in the US from Lan's opinion piece can be factually disagreed with. We are running a large deficit and spend much more than we take in. Cronies have been rewarded with big contracts (Haliburton). At least conservation interests have been dissed. Big stake holders have been rewarded. The only thing the Belizean govt. appears to be doing is taking steps to address the budget deficit by raising taxes. They seem to have their act together more than we knowing if you have that large a deficit you need to either increase revenue or decrease expenditures, we seem unwilling to do either.

...............and thank you all for such a heartwrenching political debate.... Now back to the news......I for one enjoy the info Lan brings to the table on this website. His two sentence political comparison has riled some feathers but the thousands of other words are describing a major event happening in Belize.

Gibby, why the sarcasm? Did your water not go off this morning?
Mine did. I thought it was kind of a mis-placed protest because I am reliably informed that the "Usual Suspects" in Belmopan really don't give a rat's bottom if we in San Pedro don't have water.

Chris,
I think if you re-read his post he was in sympathy with you. The first sentence referred to the snippy diatribes on this thread that are addressing US politics. From what I know the situation in BZ is not too suprising. "Usual Suspects" is aptly put.

Chris, Looks like the Belizean Govt. has become even more Buysexual since my daze in BZ....They never turn the water off in Tennessee because of all the damage to the Moonshine Stills from drying out.
