We are coming to Ambergris Caye in April (woo hoo!) and are planning on Salamander Hideaway. We have looked at most of the hotel/guest house sites and like the privacy and romantic setting of Salamander. Has anyone stayed there/visited? Can you get to town, even if it is just for the day? Thank you!

Phew! After reading and reading........ and reading and reading...... have decided on Xanadu. Seems perfect: close to town but not too close, clean, friendly, good price. Decided that Salamander is too remote even for us.

We will also be at Xanadu in April. Arrive 4/26 for 1 week.
When will you be there?

Never stayed at Xanadu, but, when I visited A.C. last August a buddy and I hired a boat to take us up and down the coast, and stopped in to Salamander Hideaway for a drink. It was very pretty--and very secluded. When we were there (in low season), no one was even staying at the place. The staff was having breakfast in the dining hut (we stopped in for a drink) and some of them were going fishing later that day to kill the time. The only thing in close vicinity was the Habaneros plantation, next door.

The facilities looked nice, but very basic. The huts were a little smaller than I would have expected (one of them was open, and it seemed like the bed took up most of the space). It looked like it might be a fun place to stay to get away from it all for a couple days, but you'd have to understand exactly what it was you were purchasing when staying there, or you might be disappointed.

Salamander is awsome. The people treat you like royalty...and yes, they will take you to town. All you have to do is ask Herbert. Mr. Flowers will cook you up the most killer fish and Belizian dishes you'll ever imagine. Miss Miriam makes sure you have everything you need for your rooms. Imagine walking in your hut with a fresh palm frawn on the bed and designer soap in your bathroom. They are small rooms, but who wants to be inside? The sunsets over the jungle are beautiful as well. But the best part is you have the beach all to yourself...it's fabulous there. Check it out.
